Geoff Vickers was a pioneer in his day ,he was one of the first to grow it , always remember Clive Goodwin buying a Massey 525 combine with a maize header in the late 80's so they could cut some for the grains don't think it ended to well though think they cut 2 acres then parked it up at the back of the farm where it stayed until it rotted away ...funny really maize was Vickers down fall in the end, when the farm went organic he was still trying to grow it ,he couldn't farm without his sprayer and liquid feet

A photo of Peckforton Estates in the late 70's I took from Beeston Castle.

taken while working for a contractor. I was probably in a Crystal 12011. I remember arriving at this customer's farm to start chopping for the first time... and the first job was to partly dismantle his trailer, as he had assembled his to fill from the opposite side to ours
This 9600 was hired for a few days, it possibly replaced a 7600 (hired from the same dealer) which got round the field once before boiling:facepalm: I also remember a hired IH 955, fast on the road but also boiled on the Grasshopper mower - replaced by a JD3130 which had been tweaked I think, and could mow as fast as you could tolerate trying to stay in the seat:D

Everything boiled back then ,trips to water troughs were frequent occurrence s least you could retrieve your pop bottle keeping coolish in it

As a follow-on to my post above...
John didn't trust turbo's for some reason, and stories used to circulate about how much fuel a rival contractor's 7000 and 7600 used while chopping - I think he used to inter-ficher with their pumps, because they certainly smoked more than anyone else's Fords at the time:eek:
So in spring 1985 we got a pleasant surprise when 2 of the newly-launched (possibly at Smithfield '84? he usually went to that) 7910's appeared. Lovely tractors, air-con etc, and comfortable with the Grasshopper, Claas 44 balers, 10-tonne trailers etc which we used at the time.

No more hiring junk after that:D

Between Ryders, Peckforton and Kinseys I've probably been in most of the fields in that picture. And I've been towed by the dog up the castle a few times too.
