Barford SXR 6 ton dumper 2007

Hi folks

No experience of heavy plant but I've been asked by a guy on the island to help him with an issue on his dumper. Everything works on it but when he turns the ignition key off the engine doesn't stop, unless he gives the dash several heavy thumps and that doesn't always work!!....

Can anyone help with a pointer as to what it could be?

Stop solenoid sticking, or ignition switch bad connections? Solenoids usually have two coils: a pull in coil to activate the contacts and a hold in coil that has just enough strength to keep the contacts closed. Thumping the dash seems to indicate a fault with the ignition switch contacts rather than the solenoid - much cheaper to fix!
