Barley straw for bedding cubicles?

My usual straw seller has offered me some barley straw in the swath for similar money to wheat, the benefit being it's very close to me.

Never used barley for bedding before and will be going through a straw chopper and into a weeping wall system.

Is using barley better, worse or indifferent than wheat?

They'll eat more of it.

Similar money to Wheat as in per bale , or per acre? If it's comparable per bale, I'd choose Barley every time, but maybe not so much if it's Winter Wheat that your used to and Spring Barley that he's offering at the same price per acre , when all you want is bedding straw!

When I moved from NE Derbyshire where as long as you agreed to clear the field, straw in the swath was nearly for nothing, to Staffordshire where neighbours could get to fighting over straw, I was regarded as some kinda nutter for bedding up with Barley straw. Then I saw the locals counting the windles out to sprinkle under their cattle, and realised why, :D

In the swath, its a bit dearer but is almost next door, his wheat is a few miles away so when accounting for the extra time to haul, i reckon its nearly the same price, plus, getting it in the barn a couple of weeks earlier is a bonus too.

Some winter barley is worse that wheat for bedding

In what way?

its to hard and golden , dont soak up , farmers hate it , soft wheat is better than hard barley. most of my customers want spring barley , but you can get soft winter barley, Im not sure what makes it Hard, if its the ground its grown on or the variety, it dont help that its harvested a lot earlier than it uesd to be
