We don't realise how caring and generous Comedians can be, despite their self-denigrating stage acts.

A prime example is the late Bob Monkhouse, who rivalled Jack Benny in the miser stakes.

But that wasn't true at all. When he was on tour, he went through about 20 dress shirts a week. Each one cost £20 to launder and iron.

So at the end of each week, he just donated all his soiled shirts to an Oxfam shop.




And he went round to the shop again on Monday morning, and bought them back for 50p each.

And I remember Ken Dodd describing his girlfriend wearing a ''semi-shuffty, di-fannious negligee.

And for the avoidance of doubt, It was his girlfriend who was wearing it, not Ken.
