We looked at Lincoln University but they were quite snooty about taking my son on as he hadn’t got a formal agricultural qualification. That’s not a recommendation but they do it.

James Christian-illet. He used to be based out of dunholme village hall but since covid most of it is done via zoom with just the exams in real life. I’ve done all of mine with him and can’t fault him. No funding I’m aware of. I did soil and water with Simon goodger and that was ok too but only went there as James didn’t do it.

Where would I contact this person?

I did mine at Lincoln university a few years ago. It cost 2K(no grants) but I have had the cost back many times over now. I had no formal qualifications but plenty of practical experience, I thought I would be out of my depth but wasn't plenty of practical experience helps(more a case of polishing myself up). It was a short week about six times from Nov-May. The only thing I would say is once you start be prepared to put the time in at home/work learning straight away and it will not be so bad.
I absolutely hated doing the project, probably my worst of it, just do what needs to be done to pass, no more.
BASIS is all about correctly id weeds/diseases etc and as a last resort using a chemical that does not kill the crop.
Today I still leave the odd patch unsprayed(not near a road and it does annoy a family member) to see if the results work and if the crop does warrant the application, always interesting going back a bit later to compare the sprayed/unsprayed.

Dr Jim Lewis was ace back when I did mine with him. Would recommend, hugely experienced chap.

I'd encourage people to get themselves and/or their spray and fertiliser operators BASIS trained. They might not ever make a recommendation of their own ever but their understanding of products and their uses, the hows and whys are invaluable and builds confidence in their role, not to mention their personal development and job satisfaction. It also means you and your team will be more on the same page with an agronomist- if you use one.

For a project, I would highly that you focus on chemical stores or chemical handling as this will be the part that most people would have the least knowledge of as we all just take it for granted. The rest is sort of 'working knowledge' many people involved with arable will already have some grasp of.

Where did you do yours, @robbie ?

I did mine with Simon at Riseholme. FACTS and PPA too. Soil & Water with Dr Jim Lewis http://www.djlag.co.uk/ and BETA at GWCT at Loddington
I did mine with JP (John perslow) through the training association east, the ones who have the yellow piece of paper with all the courses listed in the fron of the farmers guide.

I dont think JP or rob at the training association are doing it anymore. My mate was on the course last year and all the weed idents had to be done online, all the online pics were of weeds at completely different stages and very poor quality. Result was only one or two passed.
My mate did a re sit with Debbie wedge???? And passed.

I did FACTS and soil and water with Dr Jim, who is ace!!!

All the courses were run at the golf club just up the road at watton so it was brilliant for me.

I did mine with Debbie about 15 years ago and thought she was pretty good

Ahhhh JP agronomy! Top chap. Always desperate to get his shorts on in spring; to the extent that he would start the day in trousers and carry his shorts around with him so he could change into them at lunchtime 😂

Another vote for Simon Goodger / Chris Tolley - I did mine with them at Lincoln Uni and they were great. I’ve put staff through there since and all had good success.
