The market capacity for batteries supporting the grid and generating revenues from Firm Frequency Response (FFR), is now oversubscribed. So none of our development partners are accepting any new battery projects in for this particular sector of the market.
We have had a number of projects in this sector come to a grinding halt and we are now evaluating the viability of each of these sites using other technologies. If you have a site/project which is currently dependant of FFR revenues, you may want to check the status of your project with the developer/funder, if applicable.
On a positive note, we have signed a distribution agreement with an Energy Storage Unit manufacturer and supplier. The Energy Storage Units are not 'batteries' per se as they can continually discharge rated power from 4 hours to 15 hours dependant on the modular configuration, and the aligned on site generation technology, plus other factors.
Case Study Overview: Behind-The-Meter Stacking Service Stacking in the UK.
An agricultural business in the South West, had a 60kW/300 kWH Energy Storage Unit installed and connected to 250 kWp of solar panels (grid connected), to maximise the amount of PV generation consumed on-site and minimise the amount electricity imported from the grid. To maximise the profitability of the project, the Energy Storage Unit will provide ancillary services to the grid as part of the service 'stack' to produce additional revenue.
Headline info:
7-10 years project payback.
14% Internal Rate of Return (Unlevered).
54MWh/Year Additional PV Generation Utilised.
The key maximising revenues and returns with the Energy Storage Units is existing on site generation technology and on-site consumption.
I will post more information on all the Energy Storage Units, available sizes/capacities and details of the commercials including the fully funded model, next week.
We are also seeking sites which are suitable for solar arrays.
The sites need to be;
Minimum 40 acres of land.
A minimum grid connection of 10MW either existing or available.
£700 per acre land rental on 20 year contract.
Grid connection costs (subject to a maximum), planning permission costs and project installation costs, are covered by the developer. If you have land which you may feel is suitable, please contact me [email protected]
