BCMS

I know we are all very happy to complain about the RPA and other government agencies, but BCMS have never failed to help me when I have rung.

I have changed my stock recording system last year and made some errors, reporting cattle dead when they are not. BCMS have been most helpful in sorting a problem that is entirely my own making, so thanks to them!

Big + 1

Further to this; I've just done my TB4 and SAC Premium (Annual) bloods

SAC have my herd details (2 herds) all fine
Ditto CTS / BCMS

Ministry appointed vet came for TB as XL contract and my vets got fed up with all the stupid training / certification hoops they have to go through to do my private TB tests (SO note Mr Assurance, doubling up of vets for annual health plan / TB etc etc for a small and healthy herd). The list from APHA for cattle to be tested was nothing like my BCMS list. Apparently it's a pretty routine problem

BCMS will be no more after the end of next year apparently as the AHDB/ NFU are taking over the job with the sole intent of making it more costly/ hassle to record movements etc.

Scotland is moving away from BCMS and onto an EID passportless system.
  • From January 2020, all calves born on Scottish holdings will have to be EID-tagged.
  • From June 2022, any other bovine moving off a Scottish holding will have to be EID-tagged.
  • Farmers wishing to EID-tag their animals earlier than these dates will be able to do so, from June 2019.

I think it’ll be a sh!t idea...can’t fault the bcms

Take a read of the EID thread in Agricultural Matters northeastfarmer.

The NFU/ AHDB are building a new recording system where in time it will be law that you have to record all your inputs like feed/ meds etc which they are going to give our buyers access to so then can work out our cop and therefore what they should be paying us.

First step is that med records will have to be recorded against each animals number, ie say you drench 300 ewes you will have to EID read each and every tag and update each number with the amount/ batch number of what they have been treated with.

This will apply to both sheep and cattle, paper records will not be allowed is the plan.

Minette Batters is behind all this apparently ( like she was/ is for farm assurance and look what a farce that has turned out to be! )

Average cost will be something like 2k a farm as you will have to buy at least one Eid reader and smartphone to update records in real time, then you add on all the extra work like reading every animal tag when you batch treat a group you will be looking at something like 4/5k+ a farm to implement this and of course farmers wont be able to recoup any of this from the price they receive.

I assume we will have to pay a fee every time you use the new AHDB system as well.

Have an eid reader, have a smartphone, don't care about 2k cost but just about had enough of pathetic admin that reaps you know rewards, have an offer that in my eyes sells my soul to the devil but returns nigh on 1/4 mill for 1/4 of the farms acreage, didn't want to do it but fast coming around to the idea of absolute no admin, little or next to no supervision, absolute no paperwork, whos the fool not to do it??!!

Ditto the above. I'm getting too old for all this. I keep very accurate PAPER RECORDS of all my animals - I was told they were a joy to see at my last red Tractor inspection but I cannot get on with the technology they are pushing us into, and its not for the sake of trying.
