Beef efficiency specialist Seth Wareing has been appointed Business Manager for the Beef Improvement Group (BIG), effective from 21st January 2019.

Within his new role, Mr Wareing will be responsible for leading BIG forward in its continual initiative of delivering Stabiliser marketing and genetic evaluation services for UK and European producers for improved beef quality, production efficiencies, sustainability and reduced environmental footprint.

Along with ruminant farm management experience in New Zealand and the UK, Mr Wareing brings a wealth of UK and global beef industry knowledge from his former role as Senior Nutrition Specialist for Keenan. Part of his role was the implementation of Keenan’s global beef strategy, travelling extensively abroad to promote and deliver best practice in farm animal feed utilisation. While at Keenan, Mr Wareing worked closely with BIG in the development of its Net Feed Efficiency (NFE) research project, which resulted in the establishment of the first NFE Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) in the UK cattle industry.

“The developments in measuring individual daily feed intake of potential breeding bulls has been a significant breakthrough for UK cattle breeders by allowing them to make accurate genetic selection decisions which will reduce feed costs and environmental impact,” says Mr Wareing. “As the UK beef industry faces continual social, political and economic pressures, BIG will lead the industry forward by providing producers with the right tools to improve efficiency for a sustainable future.”

Mr Wareing’s experience includes work with Blade Farming Ltd as UK Project Manager and Beef Nutritionist to integrate the calf rearing process from farm to processor. He has also led the ABP Food Group in the collaboration with retail and food service customers within the supply chain as the Agricultural and R&D Manager. Prior to his new appointment, Mr Wareing was the Beef Business Manager for Alltech, working in all areas of the supply chain on long- term environmental sustainability.

“Seth’s career to date has given him a wealth of experience in the livestock and supply chain industries and all the qualifications required to drive forward the overall strategic direction of the Stabiliser breeding and marketing business,” says Richard Fuller, BIG Business Director. “He has maintained a keen interest in the work BIG is doing to improve efficiencies and profitability in the beef industry since his early involvement with BIG’s Net Feed Efficiency project. We look forward to working with him in the challenging and exciting times ahead.”
