Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Do you think it works that way? Or is it the other way around? With all of the main outlets getting lambs pre booked in on dw, that means less men at auctions bidding against each other. Some of the sheep sold in auctions will be to supply some of the shortfall, I know this for a fact as the buyers are there to get them. They won’t bid any more than the dw offerings. Their master plan is working perfectly
sometimes bid a lot less if they can and do but thats marketing up to the seller to take the terms or not

The more that go on dw the lower the price will be and we loose competitive value.
Look at Ireland for a test case if you think I’m wrong
people tho have to do their business today and get their best prices. Happy with what i do each to there own but its the live market that can either boost or pull trade down as it always has .

Well that is definitely not what has happened historically. I hope you are right but I would bet you are wrong.

If they weren’t full already they’d be bidding to secure there lambs. Although they would still be depressed when there’s lots about the competitive nature of an auction means they wouldn’t drop as low as they can and will if all were sold deadweight. With the ‘just in time’ operations of an Abbattoir they’d have to bid to secure what they want, when they want it, at the right time. This all contributes to a positive trade.. now they have them queued up on their price turns just when they need and want them..

The start of the conversation referred to the vast amount of sheep going deadweight.
Have you caught up yet??
well farmers must be content with that then.? i am a big supporter of the live trade but economics and experiences over the last 15 years has made me realise that you have got to understand what you sell and go either way on a daily weekly basis. This is more apt depending on what you have to sell a 20 kg texel or 20 kg Mule x hill type/, balls and horns. Easy to command a good price for former on live but the latter is better the other way. In my humble experience

We were warned time and again about the percentage of sheep going deadweight. Once they could source the majority of what they required then they would have control and pull down the price. I have nothing against anyone selling lambs deadweight and or for better returns at the same time. I have in the past sold many lambs deadweight mainly to ABP. My point is with the demise of auctions to some degree and lower numbers in auctions coming forward, at the same time more going deadweight and being backed up, I smell trouble. Auctions aren’t going to beat current deadweight prices at the moment when they have sourced their requirements direct. There are sheep bought to top numbers up at auction for the main few but a top up is all it amounts to. There’s a lot of complaining on here about current sheep values and rightly so, however the trend we are seeing is bad news.

Its not by accident that dw has become more popular and i agree with your sentiments but when you can make more dead than alive some days what are you to do. Had £9 a piece for 40 lambs recently brought back from live auction not sold and conversely sold lambs better on live one week than dead and overall we have to market the best we can as nobody pays my bills for me. Did sell 300 one week on live too as market had export!! which is what we want
