It could just be me but I never have much luck buying young stirks? They never seem too grow out the same as calves I’ve had from 4 weeks onwards. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Some cannot handle the change of home at that stage imo. Plus some stirks are calves that were a bit steady kept a bit longer to make them look a bit better before selling.

No different to any big farming is it. How much outlay on 500 milking cows or 5000 acres of corn. Just have to borrow some of the money don’t you.
It’s all about being able to service the debt , as in how big interest payments are. If your turning over a million quid a year £100,000 is 10% debt. Turning over £10 mil and having a million finance is just the same ?!

I arrived at this in the end. “They aren’t doing over well, bounce them into market now” sort of theory. Got bitten a couple of times. That being said I did buy a 5 month old blue bull the other week and he’s mixed with the others and is doing famous!

I was talking to a lad at the mart the other day he had just sold a big batch of really nice heifers privately and had some of the same ones at the mart. He was saying how he had sold all these for £1150 which was well up on the year around £200 but what was interesting was his replacements were coming in around £550 which were exactly the same as the previous year. It sounded like he had someone buying these cattle for him he said he couldn’t understand it.

Yes. I didn’t see what he has coming in. He’s one of the folks I’ve been talking to at the auction for probably 15 years or so now but don’t know who he is and it would be a bit embarrassing to ask if you know what I mean!
Try being in an area where there are basically 4-5 surnames 😂 Everyone is known by their farm name…

I get told what I’ve been doing over last week or two by folk and I can’t even remember half of the time 😂 bloody nosey buggers with a good memory
“Those hoggs of yours look well” 🤨 which ones?
“Saw you chasing those escaped hoggs the other day” 🤨 did you? Never offered too bloody help did you??
“Went past a grand field of grass the other day and the day after I went past and someone has dropped 3/400 bloody blackies in it! Thought there’s only you stupid enough too have them around here!”
I can’t do a damn thing without being spotted!!
