Is this 45k tup really going to do that ( skins, power, conformation, carcase and a bit of style for starters) and pay his way? Of course he may well make money out of his offspring this time next year but yet again it's a race to the bottom as it becomes style over substance or name over common sense and stockmanship.
Absolutely, but the swale breeders are not the only ones guilty of this

Nope, it is the same with pedigree animals all through. A clique of “top” breeders get together and decide what they think makes a good specimen. Because they are “top” breeders they command respect from other breeders and people will copy them.
Unfortunatly, it appears that most of the time, whatever the animal, the top breeders forget their end market… the commercial lowland farmer. They can deny it and evade it as much as they like. But when it boils down too it they all need us down country boys too come and buy their produce. If they produce what we don’t want? Then eventually they pay the price. I know there is a lucrative market for Bonny headed mules for gimmering. I quite agree it’s a good market too aim for. But why has conformation been sacrificed too such an extent? Our end game is and always will be the finished stock market. So we have too produce what the market demands, not what we think it needs. When I did business studies at sixth form Rule 1 was “Identify your market and aim too fit it”.
But as has been mentioned before, subsidies has bred good farmers, poor businessmen?
🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s my 10 penneth anyway.

Father said carcass first then as many good points as you can afford after that.
He also said a leg on every corner

I’ve a pen full of cast tups feeding here. It’s not a good sign of trade at the moment!

If they are well fleshed they make money but we had half a dozen mule wedders out of a lorry load of Texels and cast ewes and were disappointed with the price for them, they were fleshy and big mules but of course weighed more at home. Our cast Blackie ewes made the same price of £87. Feed them well or cut your losses.

Aye, but I’ve seen your blackie ewes… same size as a lot of mules!!!
