On the other hand the easiest way to bugger up a flock profitability is to keep unproductive breeding ewes. All the work that goes into lambing % and all the rest can be gone by keeping or kidding yourself that something might breed again or give it another chance. Especially where prices are for themYes, I’m struggling to maintain ewe numbers in my pedigree flock.
Those stronger, good meated ewes have been good for a while, so every year I cash in anything that even looks at me the wrong way in the race, thinking I’ll not need to be quite so hard the next year.
of the ones I sold after weaning last Monday, probably 3/4 would have gone on again.
Smaller stores under 375kg are cheaper now than they have been for months which is fine as long as they pick back up in the autumn and do not continue to cheapen. Cattle been too cheap for too long for all the work involved and money tied up.Yes stores are ok but if you don’t put some effort into feeding them you sharp end up £400 adrift up here. The store buyers are wanting us to do a bigger part of their job for them than ever. Those smaller younger cattle are discounted unless they are the best types. It’s surprising that size frame and condition is as important as sort the feed prices are reflecting this
Thats my problem. Too soft on them sorting pre tupping. Sometimes put an extra mark on the ones that "will go another year". About half of them dont make it through the Winter. On the other hand the easiest way to bigger up a flock profitability is to keep unproductive breeding ewes. Trouble is that culls replacement has gone up the same amount ish and shes become £150 dearer to keep on top ,with every single input gone up.Have you morphed into Guth?
Cull cow prices must be circa £300 a head
up from this time last year.
Store cattle prices dont look too bad either.(Well sold by the way).
you wpuld be better selling the ones will go another year ! The dead half make the live half very expensiveThats my problem. Too soft on them sorting pre tupping. Sometimes put an extra mark on the ones that "will go another year". About half of them dont make it through the Winter.
A good looker in September can be dead by MarchThats my problem. Too soft on them sorting pre tupping. Sometimes put an extra mark on the ones that "will go another year". About half of them dont make it through the Winter.
It’s alright giving the old girls another winter when it’s a kind winter…a rough one and they drop like flys in the new yearThats my problem. Too soft on them sorting pre tupping. Cant see how small younger cattle will get any dearer in late Summer/ Autumn, unless they are fancy shapey types.Smaller stores under 375kg are cheaper now than they have been for months which is fine as long as they pick back up in the autumn and do not continue to cheapen. Cattle been too cheap for too long for all the work involved and money tied up.
£1650 bulling heifers last year are £2000 nowTrouble is that culls replacement has gone up the same amount ish and shes become £150 dearer to keep on top ,with every single input gone up.
You will just have to buy 3x the cattle bit like IA sort of set up!i was speaking with my growers head on, we sell far more than we feed.
There nearly always is a rough spell for a few weeks though.I find incessant rain is as bad as anything for them.We had some in Febuary this year, lost 4 or 5 in one week. It’s alright giving the old girls another winter when it’s a kind winter…a rough one and they drop like flys in the new year

I picked two dead ewe up this afternoon, old ewes that have just dead for the shear fun of it. Both would have made £120 this morning. There nearly always is a rough spell for a few weeks though.I find incessant rain is as bad as anything for them.We had some in Febuary this year, lost 4 or 5 in one week.
Over £100 to get rid of rubbish. We were sorting some on Tuesday I said we would look sick if we still had them in October and they were £50You best cull hard then
We've kept our heifers back (different bull )or as you've said aboveTrouble is that culls replacement has gone up the same amount ish and shes become £150 dearer to keep on top ,with every single input gone up.
Best not to think about it like thatI picked two dead ewe up this afternoon, old ewes that have just dead for the shear fun of it. Both would have made £120 this morning.
I know, did manage to go a whole 22 days (not that was counting) with loosing a ewe. Old mule are f**kers for dropping dead though.Best not to think about it like that
