It's an interesting one, these cattle keep on going up in value, but the increase per grade is even less now than it ever was pro rata. You'd get 10p/grade bonus back when they were £3/kg. So they've increased by 60% but now they're £4.80/kg still only 10p/grade. May as well just have R grades now I reckon.
Unsurprisingly, they've been more responsive in increasing the grade gaps below base.

What do you start them on ?

The get crept on a 50:50 split of Beef 16 and whole oats from July. Then when they come in the yard in November they go straight onto Bull Beef Finisher 14%. Started mixing it with rolled barley and biscuit meal at the start of Jan to make it drier and stop them eating as much 😂 only makes it about 12% CP but thats plenty imo I don't want them to grow too much I want them to flesh.

Great point...quality is not rewarded...sent an old cow this week 17yreas old a complete bag of bones...247 kg o minus 1..came back 850...does not make any sense

We have fed a bit from them and bought rape/soya blend from them to put in the cows ration. But never to feed ad.lib cattle, we take our barley into John so it works well to use Berrystock products. And in all fairness I can't knock how they perform, it's fantastic food.

I was just thinking about this the other day, they must be thinking they've got away with it.

A lot of young farmers who I have helped are struggling due to Brexit
How many young farmers have you helped?
In the nicest possible way give it a rest over brexit and find yourself a younger girlfriend in her 20s to take your mind off brexit;):) as you only live once and when you are in the village graveyard brexit will not matter one iota !!!

In theory you are benefiting from the higher ko% kgs more, seems a vastly bigger difference in the live ring but probably lost at store purchase . Do they want/ can they sell the extra meat cuts away from the loin perhaps ?

You're right I am, and I have chosen to try and breed something to hit the higher grades when no one forced me. It just seems to have been ignored in the hullabaloo of all the rapid prices rises. Its like if your annual Christmas bonus was £100 when you're on £20k/year and it stays at that even if you progress and earn £40k/year (although personally I'd be happy with the £100 bonus let alone either the £20k or £40k/year 😂)
