Abattoirs are complaining that they are struggling to find enough well finished lambs at the moment.

Slaughter numbers from June to September are running 3% ahead of last year, not surprising when the drought last year certainly limited numbers. Many less people are feeding lambs this year and with stores having been dearer, the numbers coming forward well finished now are less.

With possibly 4% less lambs and the kill ahead of last year, it certainly looks as if the sheep trade will remain strong as long as imports don't mess it up!!

I was amazed how many very lean lambs were in the fat at Welshpool today, some were real screws.
I thought the grader might run out of purple stick marker!
P*ssing away good lambs, after keeping them for 6 months.

Mine, out of a shed, were 47.5kg @£125. Wouldn't have been market topping types by any means, but that's where fed lambs were.

I had some lambs that graded fairly well last week, the buyer rang today wanting more because they are really struggling to get good meat lambs. Said fair to much bad bred sheep off grass, people have been told a bit of food is a crime, we only averaged £2.50/head for feeding lambs but had paid massively with good ko and better grades.

Have you a rough idea what feeding them inside has cost?

I can’t understand the mindset of some people as they won’t even consider feeding lambs and look at you as some kind of idiot when you say you’re doing it. Then moan that the trades bad when selling nothing better than a store lamb in the fat .

There are some that swear they never feed lambs as well but they do🤥

This time of the year if you’re not going to feed them they need to be in the stores. If they’d been in Darlo this morning they wouldn’t have been disappointed

Think I’ve been doing it the other way round sending a few fat ones in the stores. Just been taking them as they come. Still not sure wether I’m doing the right thing selling them as stores but wouldn’t be wanting to buy them at that.
