Well… what about last January to early March when we were selling hoggs at or below the cost of production? Did the butcher drop the price at the counter accordingly or use it to line his pocket? Personally I’d say go whistle, but then I’m nice like that 😂
I wont type my gut reaction 😂 but it rymed with duck off ! Someone will help him no doubt some one who wears y fronts on the outside a real hero 😂

No they dont, but i can see how it would work with a regular customer and they can average ….
That's all well an good but it says 37 farms he deals with.does that mean he's taking some every week from each farm? Bet he's not, does that mean you'd get allocated a certain number as an when.does he have favourites an only take from others when he wants. A lot to have a think about.

Any farmer want to help a butcher out this Easter?

Any one who know’s me will know I’m a great supporter of the mart system and getting a fair value for stock, in most cases I have paid well over the sales averages and paid top dollar to stock my shop.

With the current inflation in the Hogg trade (I support to an extent) selling hogget/lamb over the counter has become unsustainable and to the customer unjustifiable. It is not as easy as putting the price up week on week until the price levels off. I can not continue to sell at a loss therefore will have to stop selling it altogether.

The point I’m making here is that I’m asking everyone (37 different farms) that I have supported over the last two years of buying for myself to try and support me, there must be someone who can meet me in the middle and help me out with some affordable Hoggs to keep me going until the new season.

46-50kg Hogg’s £175.00 is where I need to be at just to break even with Transport and killing costs taking that to over £210.00 a head! So you can see where I’m struggling to connect the dots when paying £200.00+ at the mart before any other costs.

Thoughts ?? Would you help him or not ?
Well do more for less! Like the AHDB keep telling farmers.

And if that fails the butcher can get a night time job stacking supermarket shelves like everyone keeps telling farmers to do if the farming does not stack up!

Quite why he thinks New season lamb is going to be a lot cheaper than hoggs is a mystery! Exeter had over 600 NSL lambs on Monday and the SQQ was 415 ppk!

This butcher will just have to put his prices up, people will pay the increase, even the cheap supermarkets like Lidi have put their beef up £1 a kilo in the last month or so and the beef is flying off the shelves!

If he was a regular buyer of my stock, and I had a good few hoggs to sell, I think I would be tempted to help him out with a few in the expectation that this consideration would be repaid with bids over the coming year. It also keeps sheepmeat in front of his customers.
Trouble is when the time comes he would not pay you £175 for your lambs when he could buy the same type of sheep in the market for £125..

The experts on Bluetongue which is basically the same vector as Schmallenberg say that pour-ons are not effective and dipping will only help for a relatively short time as the Midges come up off the ground and bite the animals on the bare skin areas underneath.
not sure on dysect , covers better than the other pour ons and flies hate it

thats exactly it ,
they never helped us , in fact they ripped us off big time in F+M years , That BPS was given to us to keep food cheap so we all sold at around COP , will be a bit of a wake up call when they need to pay 40 years worth of inflation for same product .

To be fair i dont think he will be looking for huhe numbers , im presuming couple a week … but i dont know for sure .
I have been wondering about this because when I was talking to buyers a few years ago when hoggs were around 300p live they were telling me that was about their break even price and anything much over was loosing money. Obviously that was a while ago now but does that mean they were actually loosing money or not making as much?

More lambs than ive ever seen in frome this morning , over 2000 think he said ,all alleyways filled didnt stop long as lambing ATM so will see trade later , were replacement ewe lambs (60kg+) looking through the pens , if i was looking for 2t this year might need to raid the fat pens early i recon , cant see there will be much about , though still a lot of unfinished lambs still on farms due to wet winter .

They say this every time prices go up. What other industry would worry about getting too much for what they produce🤦
