Not pellets. I once took a wagon load of hoggs to Longtown one spring and there was a fella with some fantastic scotch hoggs there. I asked him what he’d fed them on and he said ‘nothing they’ve just ran about’ they had been on grass up near Alcan all winter. I wondered what the difference in cost/profit would be between his and mine
I know a chap from over that way who buys about 1000 every year, but runs them on 500 acre, mixture of stubbles and old pasture.Last time i spoke to him,he said it worked out just about the same profit whether to feed them or not.(the feed cost was the extra money they made) He is well clued up though, and records liveweight gain with the tags now.Been doing it for years, and knows which farms to buy off(and ones not to touch)

Stores a great trade at Stirling, alot of good texels carrying flesh around 37kgs making 70£, not a big number there today. But plenty buyer's who have kinda missed the boat for cheap stores this year.

It can often end up that way. The difference between some of the hoggs that are fed and not fed is actually just the feed cost. I filled an alley in s shed with lambs a few years back put them on hoppers straw. Fed pellets barley grains and sugarbeet pellets. The plan was to keep bringing 250 or so into the shed and finish them off. We ended up needing the shed alley for cattle and the rest stayed away on grass. The grass ones made a decent profit the ones finished properly inside didn’t. Just shows what’s wrong with the job.
