I know the feeling. Our beet been in 3 weeks this week and very little movement. Spring barley not going to be a barnbuster. Straw is my worry.
Agree Northernterritory, I think straw was going to be a serious issue for many before the lack of rain compounded things. We're lucky and produce our own, but I feel for those who have no choice but to try and source it! Could be a major shortage, I think.

Very few grazing cattle about today and the ones that were sold were certainly much dearer than last week and the dearest for some months!

Cull ewes however were down £8/10 had yesterday.
yep bang on , sent one decent shaped cull pure charollais ewe , along with couple tail end wether hoggs to make load up, she came back at £85 , should have been another tenner really , the hoggs were same price felt they were worth another fiver they had frame just needed a bit of intensive for a week , . glad i kept the hogg females now .

Any ideas on NS lamb, got first draw texel x ready to go to market tomorrow at around 34kg? Don't like hitting trade the Friday before a bank holiday but day after should be OK?

34kg really? No worth keeping a month yet?

Had 3mm of rain this month, not much more in April, another month they'll grow frame but not finish unless we buy in feed and they'll just be taking what the next batch would be eating anyway

Could keep them a month and make less....well not 'could'....probably will!

That's my thinking, people had good numbers of lambs so they aren't going to be short later. Unless people hang on to ewe lambs after cashing in any run on to sell as breeding ewes on the high hoggett prices in Feb

I was told of several people locally getting £100 for 36 & 37kg lambs in marts last week. Get ‘em gone.
I would check out if there is demand for 34s at the mart before taking them. Ive seen 30s go through Longtown plenty times, complete with balls and tails. They just look 5 or 6 weeks old,and it just seems wrong to me.I think its wasted potential. And more likely the mothers will get clap.

Whilst I would normally agree I think this will be the best price we see for lambs. There’s a big crop out there...a bird in the hand...

Anyone want to call the beef price going forward, I’m not sure it will keep rising as once the food service sector gets going again they will be looking to find the cheapest mince/burgers/steaks they can do which will suck in the cheap imports, then the public who have been buying local and cooking at home and are fed up and want to eat out are not going to be buying so much to eat at home.....

I’m sitting on 10 cull cows and the tail end of my bull beef and a couple clean cattle.... how long to hold is my real question..... some of the cows still have autumn calves on them, normally would wean in July and sell cows then but could wean a month early as calves are strong. Others are out at grass just waiting for a either a decent lift or me getting on and booking them in.

Far too light unless you put them on the light lamb scheme!

No idea on numbers but im hearing that Exeter was packed out with sheep today and trade for spring lambs took a fair drop on last weeks trade!

Mopped up the last ten of my hoggs into Welshpool this morning. 40.5kg at £96.50. Very pleased with that, and the mart scales were weighing heavier than mine too....

Took a couple of ram hoggs in as well. One Charollais at 61kg (feet not good enough imo) @ £117 and a 62 kg Beltex who's balls had decided not to grow to even 'Beltex size' made the same. Beltex was apparently a 'toother', which it must have changed in the 7 miles between here and the market, but made the same anyway.
