Its a good auction Bentham.
Quite old fashioned but thats part of the appeal i suppose and the folk are friendly.
Good set of yardmen aswell....we loaded a wagon load of gimmer lambs last autumn , we followed on with some lambs in the trailer a bit later on, by the time we got there the yard lads had sorted the wagon load into their pens for us without being asked, very helpful team.
At other times ive known an auctioneer help to sort.
There's a good team at Bentham, Iv'e been going there since it reopened after F&M, they have been lucky over the years with 2 young auctioneers who have grown and developed into 2 of the best in the trade, one still there 1 moved moved "back home", all overseen by SD who has worked incredibly hard to build up the market in the last 25 years into one of the leading markets in the country certainly for sheep. But 1 man can't do it alone he needs back up from his staff in the office and the yardmen.
An all round good mart doing well with no fancy slogans. and it actually IS nearer than you think.

I have a guy who buys out of Bentham for me. Always seems to get good genuine sheep.

I was keen to go up the other week but the idea of sitting in traffic on the M6 the Friday evening before the first Bank Holiday after lockdown didn’t fill me with joy.

Might be ok if you get extra special treatment when you get there though
Both marts attract a lot of good stock, some damned good stock land around boswells makes it hard for me to compete their , us hill farmers were Hawick mart men until it closed , boswells was very much traditionaly inbye mans mart, easy growing on the boswells soil micro climate in that area as well .

Can someone explain this please,Thirsk steers -5.6p,heifers -2.4p,and bulls-6.8p yet overall average is only down -1.3p,I'm guessing its balance of bulls v steers and heifers but still takes some fathoming
There are a lot of traps to fall into when compiling averages. Are they averaged per total kg, or per total head (the former is more technically correct, but would lead to heavy cattle slewing the figures). If an overall average is clumsily made from the categories, then numbers similarly slew the result, as you say.

Above pedantics aside, those figures look fishy.

Its crystal ball time.Do we sell now at smaller weights,or wait a month and get heavier weights but might come out at the same £/head with lower p/kg.............and then theres qurbani July 20th,whether that will make a difference or not.
If it were me I’d be cashing at lighter weights. In theory the next festival won’t affect springers a great deal apart from entire tup lambs that is!
