Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Got to laugh at some of the comments speculating about them high priced cattle at Hexham yesterday. Was a good friend of mine who was selling them, spoke to him last night and there was certainly no “extra luck” or anything “fishy” going on. They’re a very genuine family who support the live ring whether it be store or fat.

The beasts aren’t show beasts and he said the chap who bought them won’t be killing them for a while. Likes them big, big weights apparently when he kills them.

I say good for them for taking the risk of putting them through the ring and they got the benefits.

I’ve had a call today about them too (even though it’s got nothing to do with me) speculation about non genuine going’s on
I just explained what I did earlier
As I said this morning good luck and well done to all involved

I really don’t get this, if someone gets a good trade for stock people can’t seem to accept that they have produced good stock and have been suitably rewarded for it . Like you say it’s nothing to do with me but I was delighted to see this trade because it shows what is possible. Next year Rodney!!

Only thing that could pi@@ folks off would be if they have been sending them in deadweight and getting pulled back on weight limits which would theoretically make them in their reckoning a good few hundred pounds less
As I said it’s two fingers up to the dw crew hopefully more cattle can be marketed this way it might be a turning point for all of us
I personally have been pretty fed up of getting pulled on age or weight or whatever it is it’s all bull to me but that’s my opinion

These silly reasons to pull the price down will disappear when all these cows have disappeared. I think the cow men have a good 10 years ahead if they can keep a lid on costs. I can see the sheep job been overdone over next 10 years but the tree planting might keep a lid on sheep numbers.

Exactly, and seemingly if you produce market topping stock there's plenty on here who are convinced it's not profitable.

Its a tough one. Live auctions are important and I'm a big supporter but theres a place for both to keep everyone on their toes. I keep trying to make suggestions to our levy board and their reps but rarely get much feedback ... tbh feels like they just agree and ignore most of the time but I'll keep at it! They are paid good money (levy and government funds) to market our product and we really need to get them working harder on

The risk ? Where was the risk ? No risk the risk was going dead weight and been bumped for over size . Im pleased to hear it was a genuine affair id be bloody disgusted if had not been .

I wasnt really meaning you, just folk in general, anyone tops a sale and they seem to be there to be shot at.
Ok 👌in that case i appologise i thought you were directing that at me . you have to admit tho a kind of unusually high price for a commodity which in 99% of the time has celling price and that ls been plasterd over socail media is going to attract some speculating .

it’s all shyte isn’t it? We’ve put up with it for that long we have gotten used to it.
If a beast is bigger than another one cut a bit off or make a few extra joints or steaks
The only thing I can add too that is when I spent a bit of time working in the old butchers down the village at weekends when I were a nipper he showed me two lumps of sirloin. One off a 320kg carcasse, the other off a 400kg. The way he put it was,

“Mrs Smith comes in for 2 steaks on Thursday, ready for Friday night. They have too be an inch thick too get a good steak that cooks right for her. The extra weight of an inch thick sirloin steak off the 400kg body puts her off so she buys something else. Whereas steaks off the 320kg body sell as fast as he cuts them as they are affordable. Too get the steaks affordable from the big body he has too cut them thinner, this then causes complaints as Mr Smith says I’ve been fiddling them on the weights. So he has too start trimming the big steaks down and mincing good steak as what else can you do with trimmings realistically? (My mum used too go in and buy all his odd ends of steak at one time but not enough too keep him cleaned up) so I can see why the high street butcher likes his small beef bodies. The catering job though? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Surely they can trim as they please? They aren’t selling raw meat that the housewife looks at before it cooks?

Have you ever tried carrying a 400kg + body into a small back street shop ?

I think we were just amazed a commercial beast was worth so much to kill , now we no we can expect the likes of jarretts to be giving that type of money trade will hopefully jump a fair bit. They buy alot around here in the live prime and cull markets so its very positive news .

They womt want to trim tho will they , whats point of buying it if a larger % id trimmed off might as well buy the smaller carcass in the first place ?
