Noticed this in the Longtown stores report.

One of the highlights of the sale was a run of North Country Cheviot stock ewe hoggs consigned by Messrs J Matthewson & Son, Routin Lynn, Berwick. They sold to a top of £190 for a pen of 24, achieving an average of £176.86 for 84 sold.

I bought a few cheviot mule shearlings in lamb to texel scanned at 200% for £188 a couple of months ago,why would you run them on when they are worth so much to kill?
He is retiring but has always sold good stock.Bit of a shame if they are just going for the chop.

Bought 80 breeding ewes off him at Longtown in October at £90.........................or rather the missus and young son did.
I gave them instructions to buy a pen, thinking 25 or so,just enough to go in the bottom deck.
Apparently neither of them knew what buying a pen to cut meant. :)
First one lambed this morning,a pair of cheviot mule ewe lambs.(y)

good shearlings are gunna take some buying, can see good commercials £300 plus

With plenty of poorer sorts about at £160
Can’t see them being that dear unless the lamb trade stays up where it is, if fat lambs are back to £120 and store £80’s then people will keep lambs back as replacements. I do think we will see them being £200 though which tbh is enough, that’s coming from us that have 3000 to sell.

How many farmers are really benefitting from this trade though, many people are into the tail end of their lambs round here and although itl bump up the average going into the autumn sales needing say 150 @£300 replacements costing £45k will take some stomaching won't it. Already mentioned here perhaps people will keep a few less ewes and keep lambs longer.

Breeding sheep haven’t looked particularly dear considering the rest lately

Yes like I have said might be the time to cut back and have more flexibility on the job when you sell. Instead of folk buying silly toys on grant schemes they might be as well putting some slatted lamb finishing sheds up

Our hoggs have currently got 70 acres knackered that is well needed for lambing, we are lambing in a few weeks time we have just had a heated discussion (the mrs and me) about this there’s no correct answer
It’s not all plain sailing

With the associated costs, it's a risky business jumping in and out of things mind isn't it. When your out now you need a fair lump to get back in, no guarantees that one years trade follows the other. Average it out, dont get giddy and invest in over your head on a good year should help with leaner years. It takes some cash flow these days just to keep things ticking along.
