It's been a tough winter on ewes. Mine have melted since lambing. Everything out is being fed - even singles. Twins on nearly a kilo a day. Ground is unbelievably wet. Heavy rain again tomorrow. Someone on here said their ewe mortality was less than 1% for the year to date and that they were unhappy with that. I managed 3% loss over 3 weeks 😢
400 miles north of you we have had a mild winter. Lleyn and Texel x no cake to singles and only half pound to twins which have now stopped when we saw how big lambs were. All outside except trips (not easy in this weather as you see from my pictures on another thread). Ewes are in good nick and grass certainly coming now between the ponds.

Similar for me, the ewes haven’t lost a lot of condition but I think the milk is going off them. The March lambers have got a feed block, 0.8 kgs of cake a day, fodder beet and grass although not a lot of that. Still losing a few lambs and as I expected starting to get ewes with mastitis, 3 today.
Our grass just isn’t growing, I think the roots have been waterlogged for too long and it won’t take off until it gets sun and dries out. Put creep feeders out this week. It’s costing a fortune, normally don’t feed much after lambing

This has really shown up the continental ewes, for the second year running, mules doing a much better job of rearing their lambs

2000 and 86 that the two worst I remember. They were both sleety and snow, this one’s got a way to go before it’s as bad as those two.
2013 and 2018 both way worse than this year. This year has been wetter for longer but 2013 was the spring from hell with deep snow everywhere and 2018 was just miserable.

That’s what’s getting to me. Haven’t put anything out since 29th of march but have had to bring a few back in to either save lambs or mother new lambs on. If it would just square up a bit it would give lease lambs a bloody chance! Just a waste but there’s nothing you can do 🤷‍♂️
We aren’t even catching them to come back in 🤷🏻‍♂️ sheds are full to bursting with in lambers, individual pens, nursery pens and cattle. If they lose their lambs once they’re out that’s it, they’ll be off to celebrate Quirbani. Can’t do it all and if I started bring more back we’d soon be in areal mess. Managed to tighten everything up more tonight and fit 240 ewe lambs inside that should start tomorrow onwards. Not much floor space visible 😩🙈

The problem is what we turn out is a lottery as to wether they are going to be ok or not. If they are in shelter they are fine if the ewe decides to stand on a hill end then a day like what we’ve just had they are in trouble
