Beet 23

I noticed a real aphid explosion with the first hot days we had last weekend. It went from next to no winged to masses and I mean masses of juvenile wingless in 2 or 3 days, well beyond thresholds.
I sprayed late at night mid to end of last week and they'll be 12 leaf and beyond in a week's time, I could and did think about not spraying but decided not to take the risk as resistance is gradual and not instant once the plant is 12 leaves.

Found this, our contract from 1974/5 £16 ton and according to Google that's £170 odd per ton today!!!!! Even if you allow for yields to have trebled in the intervening years that's still £57/ton today.
Our contract then was worked out on 16t/AC but returns from that era show a lot of "C" beet. Im told that everyone grew a lot of C beet to avoid having quota taken away as it had a big value and was hard to buy in.

Not also there was a early delivered bonus aswell as a late delivery bonus, from the NFU survey I reckon that's something that might be included in future years too.

If you anyone hasn't sold their free buy entitlements yet, the price has dropped from £60 to £51.80 in the last week.

Update on the below. They started to recover, we borrowed an irrigator and applied an inch of water, waited a bit longer and put the 2nd herbicide on. Left it a bit longer and it became clear half the plants had given up and died, the remaining plants had completely stunted roots that hadn't developed since the day they were sprayed. So it's been roundupped and I get to drive past it 4 times a day till it becomes potatoes next spring.

I’m here to perform the public service of making you all feel better about your beet:

On the one hand I managed to sell our 20% freebuy at an average of £56.82. On the other hand I nuked 16 acres of beet. Win some, lose some.

Late drilled have caught up and in most cases over taken the early drilled ones, it's definitely not been an early drilled year.😥

Also I'm quite surprised by the amount of VY showing up in places on non cruiser but sprayed crops.😥
Sorry to hear about VY showing up, I was going to say it seems weird the beet looking their proper colour this year! Ours are cruiser treated, and I haven’t walked through them, but no apparent VY’s from the road. Not like this time last year

Agronomist doesn't like tank mixing boron with too many things.
Revystar will need to bring a lot to the party due to its cost .££s.
I'll happily chuck Yara boron in with other trace elements and fungicides.

I don't know the rate of revy in beet yet but it'll have to really be something special to be worth it, potentially come into its own in a high cerosporia year.🤷

Enough, juts because beet are a good price it doesn't mean we need to find ways to make growing them more expensive for the sake of it.
Sure, but the year before last cercospora did a fair bit of damage, I don't know what Revystar costs per ha but it would soon be earnt back if it actually.worked.

Of course, last year the moth and the frost rendered cercospora immaterial.
