Looking at replacing some electric polywire on three reeler systems, quite a lot of choice Rappa/Voss and general eBay suppliers what’s peoples opinionsand experiences on different makes of wire? price not the deciding factor

All my temp systems are Rappa. It works really well with their ATV winder.
All semi perm stuff is Voss because it’s highly conductive and cheap.

I’ve got the hotline poly wire. Seems to be doing the job. I like it because it’s ta white so easier for stock to see it

It’s easier for you to see, but do sheep see colours the same? :scratchhead:

I used to use a black & yellow wire for cattle at home, thinking that’s the colours used by nature as a warning (think wasps, venomous snakes, etc).
That said, everything is RAPPA (red) polywire now, and it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Rappa £33 for 600m online and VOS £59.99 for 1000m other eBay shops are £21 ish for 500m so not a lot in them really
But big differences in number of metal strands in wire between 3 and 9 Does this make a difference to performance except conductivity ?

Is conductivity not the performance?:scratchhead:

I wouldn’t touch anything with less than 6 strands of wire now, but more the better really. Steel wire is better of course, but an absolute pig to use, so the closer you can get to that, in a product that’s actually practical to use (no steel reels here!), has got to be the way to go?

Whats the best steel wire for a semi-perm peimeter fence, around herbal leys. Timber stakes with insulators , 20-25m apart.

High tensile or steel multi strand?

I will use plastic post and poly wire inside... Mains or high power solar+battery.

HT is better without a doubt.

With a Gripple in each to tension/ retension.

Can put the gripple between the insulator and strainer if you so wish ...but then theres a bit longer biting wire uncovered of course .. iyswim.

I use a 6mm polybraid cord with 6 stainless and 3 copper wires in the poly. Conductivity is great. 6mm is very thick though which makes it quite heavy. Which has its downside. I graze my sheep in an area with lots of wild boar, being thick visibility is great.
Had several accidents with boar and netting, changing to thick wire has been an upgrade.

not 6mm thick but so happens got some of this the other day, for river bank i think...
would possibly be a bit camoflagey on the kale strip graze...

With the performance side I was meaning does The amount off strands effect the strength of the wire or will 3 be as strong as 6 or 9 just less effective conductor obviously

Gallagher turboline 9 strand poly wire here, it’s on a few Rutland reels and has got a lot of cut and joins in now and still working really well!
If no cutting I use the rappa reels with rappa poly wire but I couldn’t get 600m of the gallagher on a rappa reel

I would expect it to be just as strong, as the plastic gives it strength. I’d suggest that, if you’re relying on it’s physical strength to keep stock in, then the battle’s perhaps already lost? Getting power through it is surely the most important thing?

THanks. (y)

What do you put on the corner strainer posts, just a 5" driver, or struts as well? Thinking around 250-300m straightish runs, less across.

We use the Rappa polywire but usually two red and a white one in middle, less chance of mixing them up.

the thicker poly like rappa lasts longer reeling in and out , i have some thinner mvf stuff here , it frays after 4 or 5 years the rappa stuff still like new

yeah got to strut them (y) not done properly else. 5 inch will be just ok. but we usually use 6 or 7 's even they are strutted all depends how many wires as well i guess. but always struts..
