Looking for a set of new ratchet straps
have many people gone for the ratchets that you now pull down to tighten instead of the normal pulling or pushing the handle upwards?

they are for a bale trailer situation so up quite high to start with.

best online supplier would be great?

I’ve considered the pull down type but concluded that as I am not even 60kgs I can probably push up far more than I can pull down.

I would definitely recommend the pull down ratchets, you can keep straps tighter than normal. They just take a bit of getting used to when first starting to tighten. I got some normal straps from agri link not sure if they do the pull down ones tho.

I have bought from both,
Tony Beal was more expensive, but good quality and personally worth the extra if buying to last.
The ratchet shop ones do job but the ratchets are lighter made, I see there ergo pull down ones have plastic handles, but the standard have an alloy of some sort, ours have corroded and are now uncomfortable to use about 3 years old and if you order for example a 10m set, you get 10m of webbing, but you lose a bit by time it's looped through ratchet.
Tony Beal ones allow for this and would be 10m assembled.
They also make straps to order, so could have shorter or longer tails on ratchet to change height of ratchet to suit a particular job or operator.
I find standard style suit bit shorter to bring height down and ergonomic (pull down) style needs bit longer or you end up on your knees to pull on it.

Get the pull down WITH LONG HANDLES like these

Good quality straps, they're not the dearest, and delivery is very prompt, highly recommended ?

I was strapping straw yesterday. My trailer had the long handle straps, the other trailer had pull down, but, short handles and the difference was very noticeable!

Back for more today, provided my new pony gets repaired ?

Only need the long handle ones of your not compensating for something :woot:

On a serious note, get pull down ones. I have the short ones so they all fit in my strap box, the longer ones are easier to get extra tension but I can get the same tension if I work a bit harder for it ?

Needed new cooling fan and viscous coupling unit

Workshop foreman diagnosed the problem over the phone

Then apologises because their parts delivery was late so it wasn't fixed until 30 hours after the breakdown

I'm impressed they even got the right part from my description of the cooling fault, never mind getting it through the horrific floods in England

My thanks goes again to the the workshop at Ross of Lanark

Little pony is all now well again (until the next bit breaks ??)

Best and cheapest is Strapmaster but their website is rubbish.
Email your spec and they'll make it.
Best in my opinion is a 10m 5t strap with hook end, ergo ratchet with 600mm tail and hook. Just the right length for straw and the 600mm tail makes it better.

If you go for normal (300mm tails you need a 10.3m strap).

A few guys that move a lot of straw use 2 ratchet per strap ie a ratchet at each end of a plain strap ie no hooks gets a more even pull and tighter

wouldn’t want it too windy then, how do they throw the strap over in a breeze?

I tend to leave the strap threaded in the ratchet and lob the hook over as threading some fluffy strap end is a task I dislike. How do you all cut the end of the strap clean again?
