Best spring barley variety for heavy land

Irina has limited marketing - export only so I would recommend a contract if you want to get it away for malting.

Propino has many more market options as it is the standard variety used by all these days.

I feel reluctant to give any more tips because you heavy land growers are taking space in the market usually supplied by light land growers like me! I'll start growing milling wheat if you lot keep this up...

Thanks all,
We are not really going to add to the pile as we have stopped growing winter barley anyway, so no real tonnage difference.
Irina does look good if the markets there for it.

@Brisel Irina does actually have good end market opportunities now, both domestic and foreign including, Radeberger, Molson Coors, Carlsberg and Heineken.

Not around here. Haulage to East Anglia makes it less viable. The local market is Europe via Poole, Southampton or Shoreham.

It will be more relevant to the OP though. (y)

Rather than attempt to grow a third wheat I am opting to grow a couple of fields of spring barley instead.
Any particular varieties that stand out other than Propino/Concerto etc?

What end market are you going for?

Feed - irina. Push it hard on the N as its short and stiff and will stay standing

Malt - whatever you can get a good contract for. If going open market then I'd grow planet any day of the week. You want something you can sell.

Had planet, chronicle and concerto this year. Planet was worst for brackling . Not much between any of them but concerto on best ground and other 2 or our heaviest .

I don't believe any of Sejet's Spring Barley varieties are available in the UK, only some of their Winter Barley and Winter Wheat. However, if anyone knows any different then do say

Frontier has been a stalwart variety here for years
Early to harvest high yields also from Sejet
Gangway is on the way in 2018 looks like another solid variety
