what's the up to date thinking lads? Coming to end of lambing here. Looking back at what cost me the most losses in last few weeks was........ swollen heads, with a leg or two back. Not big losses and any ewe that was tight got a cull tag to try and reduce this further. So with this in mind, what's the plan for next autumn ? Thinking easycare again, a thick skinned charloais again but maybe a hairy terminal as well, just to hedge the bets incase of very bad weather.

Well bred Chartex can give you growth and length of Charollais and hardiness and shape of texel. Have tried a few this time lambs are looking tremendous but in fairness oldest would be 2 weeks.

Chartex lambs this year are out of chartex hoggs or pure texel hoggs n ewes where a few have required assistance e.g leg back. Woolshedders were put to pure texel mainly unassisted but a couple with singles must have struggled as dead lambs, most just got on with it no issue. Next time we are looking at using chartex on some woolshedders as they are longer, lighter boned with smaller heads than pure texels so anticipate easier lambing on fit singles. Noticeable of the chartex lambs is how much longer they are than pure texels.

Did you breed the Chartex tup yourself?

Yes, out of high index texel ewe and bought in charollais. Used ram lamb with highest muscle depth scan. Son bought in some well bred f1 and f2 chartex to put him to, the first lambs are tremendous in terms of small where needed with tremendous length. Be interesting to compare how these grow in comparison with the f1's out of the texel ewes. Thought is now to buy in a recorded charollais ram to put across the texels ewe lambs and ewes not going pure and pick best ram lambs to go across all chartex and smaller end of shedders as we should be up to number of pure shedders this time.

Well, if we’re going to put a hand in the odd one to sort a miss-presentation (which call me old fashioned is the bare minimum I think we should do as we’ve chosen the ewe and the tup and to put her in lamb) personally I’d keep the terminal tup and sell the Easycares for Mules.
