Best time to mate dog

What's best practice for lining a bitch with a dog?
Wait until she stops bleeding and mate straight away? or leave a few days after bleeding? Only have 1 chance to mate with the dog so want to get the timing right
Thanks

Days 10-12 of season, keep away from other dogs after mating, split litters are not unknown. They will stand earlier, best way to to test is grip your hand over rump, if tailcocks to side she will be ready.

I haven’t used it myself but there’s a test available at your vet that will tell the best time for the largest litter think they test a hormone level I have always gone on day ten and again at 12 if they took on ten rarely stand the second time

Well when she stands when you press down on her back side and cocks her tail to the side she’ll stand for the dog!! Unless she’s a dog hater 😂

I’d rather go early and have a litter of 5-6 than possibly miss it and get a litter of 12 that will draw the bitch down completely. My bitches will be back working within a week with 5-6 but any more and they spend all day feeding putting a massive draw on them

I’ve always fed a big litter goats milk doesn’t take half the strain of the bitch if you don’t know when she started I’d go a day after she stops bleeding

Hormone blood predictions are shite sadly and do not predict when the bitch will stand, so go on behaviour. If you are travelling a long way as a one off it is a risk

We've mated on day 5 & 6 with 2 of our bitches and had 8 & 9 pups missed them both on day 7, that was frustrating

Progesterone testing is the thing the vet does, not always accurate, we've missed doing this in the past.

How close would you breed on pedigree. Found a nice dog for bitch but would mean pups would have same grandad and great grandad on different sides.

I wouldn't worry in the slightest. I have a young dog here, maternal and paternal grandfather is the same dog (I.e same dog sired both dam and sire to my young dog). He's a cracker and you can see his grandsire stamped all over him. Its called line breeding and its the best way to lock in good traits if you know what you're doing. Father daughter also works, etc etc. Just got to throw an outcross in when needed and cull if you get a problem.

I've always worked on the three steps /generations removed principle, by my reckoning that would be the bare minimum as you describe. As long as there are no inheritable bad traits should be ok.
