Best time to spray rushes.

Hello this may of been done on here before but when is the best time to spray rushes and what with?is it to soon to do them now?before I graze the field in may?

Weedwipe with roundup as 1st choice , they need to be growing but not to green , other option is MCPA , but that wont give you a total kill

A very healthy dose of MCPA+no ionic wetter and plenty of water about May/June . Then leave and forget about them, do not be tempted to top them.

Top them may/June time then wait 6 weeks then spray with mcpa&sticker/wetter full rate.

If you can use glyphosate that will do the job best, my choice is to spray them in their clumps and then come back when they are visibly dying off and throw a handful of grass seed in, shale it to get down to the bottom and leave be. The rushes protect the young grass and by the time they've rotted away it's all grown. If you can't use gypho', try a 50 / 50 cocktail of Thrust + Agritox, it will kill them and only knock the surrounding grass back a bit.

Go out and top them when you can, right down hard.

Let them regrow until they are green and growing hard, 12 inches tall at least. Be late June probably.

Then spray them full rate MCPA and 2,4D with plenty of water volume and good steady spraying.

Either spray with mcpa then cut 6 weeks later or cut and spray regrowth 6:weeks later. Best time to spray end June early July around here, just before they flower. We used to spray a lot on hill farms around here years ago before the environmental cheques did away with spraying and have learned the hard way what works and what does not. Personally found a weed wiper will deplete them but never provides a total kill the first year and will need redone at least once more, we sold our logic weed wiper in the end as too slow and not good enough results. I suppose depends if you have any clover you want to protect but a full spray is more effective.

They used to say wait for the seed to come, l sprayed some the first week in June big strong ones, supper strong mix, nice quiet day, got a great kill never cut them.
