BFU have asked ABN if they're using imported wheat, and if it's farm assured

BFU emailed ABN this week, asking if they are using imported feed wheat and if so can they provide details if it's farm assured (or alternatively lab tested, and can we see the results please).

Our BFU members purchase animal feeds, so from time to time we like to check up on feed mills, and check if their raw ingredients have got some form of feed safety due diligence.

We await their response.

‘Our Farm Assured members need to know to inform their purchasing decisions’
Should focus their minds.

"Our members, representing x tons of feed purchasing, require this information to continue purchasing with you. Please note that full trackability on request is now part of our terms of trade. Please make a representative available at 24 hours notice for us to audit you."

As an assured dairy farmer I’ll be asking my feed suppliers this as well.
Great. We'd like to know the provenance of our feed ingredients, both from a feed safety perspective and from a "are you supporting British farmers" perspective.

Mills want to know that our grain is up to assurance specification, so as livestock producers it's not unreasonable for us to spot check the mills.

The mills are likely UFAS accredited, but UFAS is run by AIC, and AIC is the trade association of the agricultural supply industry. Most mills and merchants are AIC members. It's not very independent is it. Really it's marking your own homework, so we want to independently keep tabs on the mills. It's a duty of care thing to make sure our livestock feed is what we expect it to be.

Are we happy with AIC running a scheme where they audit their own members?

Mills don't trust farmers to say "our grain is safe and OK to use, because we've self-audited ourselves". No, they don't at all. AIC say we've to be independently audited by Red Tractor or SQC. So why would we think it a good idea for AIC to audit their own members.

Not being harsh, but they will keep you on the never never for ages. All of them. AHDB, AIC, RT. Just same shitt, different day. Bin them all off.

They should be proud to give you full traceability details in an instant, I mean its what they need on the intake from UK farmers isn't it? Everything is traceable back to farms here so they will have all the traceability at the touch of a button won't they?

Won't they?.......

Any mill would be proud to demonstrate feed safety to anyone who asks. It would be like a free advert. "BFU have asked us for some traceability info and assurance status of our feed ingredients, so here it is.... now form an orderly queue to place your feed orders".

and if any mill isn't so forthcoming with info :oops::oops::unsure::unsure::unsure:???

(above paragraphs for any and all mills in general)

Does it really matter?
When wheat was £250+ I didn't see anyone on here saying "ok lads we'll drop the price so the livestock lads can actually make a living".
Too busy worrying about tax on profits and ordering new tractors and the next skiing holiday.
High cereal prices drove pig and poultry into the ground, hammered dairy, sheep and beef.
Think on the bright side, now that prices have fallen arable guys won't have to worry about tax.
Long may wheat and barley remain where it is.
