it’s been grinding on my teeth for a little while .
I’m not having a whinge but as we are all trying to change our way of farming in this new environmental era .
As everyone in this country has to change the way they all operate in the coming years with electric vehicles, CO2 gases ,carbon foot print, and the list goes on and on . The aviation industry polluting atmosphere ,emissions from diesel cars. Then you go on YouTube to Watch farming videos and then you see videos of tractors working let’s see how much black smoke we can get out them, Then these operators video it and post it on social media and I feel this is doing a lot of harm to our industry as we do not care As we are not condoning it .we should be stopping this bad habit .How many cars will take to throw out this amount of black smoke ?

Remember being told a story about an Italian prisoner of war, who settled and farmed in West Wales..If he saw a tractor working with no black smoke.. he'd stop the driver, and tell him to get on with it.
His ethics served him well, as he built up a big farming business from nothing..

Compared to how much fuel is Used by politicians jetting off to global warmer meetings and the pollution left up in the atmosphere it would keep many farms running fir years.was a guy here in Canada piping exhaust fumes back into the soil via a cultivator. idea was it was placing carbon and nitrogen in the soil so no need for fertilizer. Utter crap I think and not that healthy for soil but some bought into it. I think the days of hoofing out trails of smoke behind any vehicle are going to be done. but It’s just a trivial amount compared to industrial emissions. The planes stopping during the covid shut down proved the point that it’s not cows farting, tractors ploughing or even boy racers that are creating the main threat to the environment

It's to do with Stoichiometric ratio, air/fuel ratio. Optimum for diesel is 14.5:1. When it descends below this black smoke is produced.

Google is my friend^
Not quite as simple as that. If the fuel burns too slowly the same result will come about. This happens through burning fuels such as heavy oils. One reason why older diesels all ran at far lower revs to allow the fuel to burn. Now with common rail engines injecting fuel at far higher pressure very much finer particle sizes are acheived which enhances the burn rate and hopefully lack of smoke

The two photos you have used demonstrates a counter point very easily - both are from hobbies/play time.

Modern tractors will emit but a fraction of tractors of old, and since tier 5 a fraction of T3 again.

My tier zero tractors don’t burn dirty, one in particular is remarkably clean and it’s over 25 years old but it still would be chucking out many multiples of amounts of emissions compared to a modern tractor - it’s just unseen.
