I’ve seen a few blue texal rams I’m interested in have been using charloias for years but these caught my eye. Anyone used them?? I kill all my lambs so not worried about replacements.

Did you handle them, or just see them? I have always been very disappointed when moving from the ‘looking at’ stage to the ‘hands on’ stage.

Try one and see what you think, or you’ll never know.:) I would seriously suggest that you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water though, and just try the one.
You might be enlightened enough to buy all a Blue Texels next year, but I sincerely hope for Irish Charollais breeders, that they can compete quite happily.🤐

I only handled the ram lambs they seemed good quality and shape I’ll try only one for sure this year wouldn’t change fully

Just fancy a change fed up with my charloias rams getting lame for no reason

Change breeder first perhaps? A breeder problem rather than breed maybe.;)

Whatever the breeders/salesmen try to tell you, Blue Texels are just Texels, that happen to have dark wool. There is no advantage of using a fashionable Blue one over any other Texel, and you will just restrict your choice by doing so.

Safe on that one I think, given the OP’s location. But even if I was...

To be fair, I don’t think the Charollais (as a breed) is particularly susceptible to food infections. I would however say that they tend to be wooseys when it comes to the slightest bit of scald, making them walk like they have a broken leg when there is a tiny bit of scald evident.:banghead:
I’ve always found them generally far better for actual foot health than a lot of breeds I’ve been involved with though. Obviously some lines are better than others though, so improvement by selection is always possible.

I’ve 8 charloias rams from different breeders 5 purebreds 3 not pure the purebreds are the problem here never any trouble with the others. Blue texal seems to have a smaller head than ordinary texal

They are just Texels that are blue (& used to be culled for it until recently), so no reason why they should have smaller heads than those from ‘proper’ Texel breeders that haven’t chased cabbage heads.
Do you not have any sensible ‘white’ Texel breeders over there?

Just a random question but do Blue texels throw mostly black lambs?

Not mostly, but some, which made doing dark sheep skins a bonus for me for a while, until the tannery put costs up.

Blue texel was fine - but nothing more. Smaller bones than any other texel I’ve had, so ideal for hoggs or little gimmers. Nice small head too, so easier lambed overall. Didn’t finish as quick as a normal texel or (my favourite) a beltex texel cross tup. Had a try with a Charolais cross texel tup this year and it’s even quicker, I’d say. For lambs in boxes, the time to finish isn’t as important though, and the blue gave me a nice carcass a bit later on - ideal for smoothing supply to demand.
