Words are cheap and working majorities are hard to come by...... but lets not worry about facts.

The futures bright the futures Boris... question is does he have the bo11ocks to call a GE and get that majority.... i think Dominic is telling him that he needs more time to "convince" the electorate, i think Boris is between a rock and a hard place... Farage, Junker, Macron, Merkel et al have the measure of the boy.

He will announce the general election for nov2nd

Genuine question. Under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act does the PM have the gift of 'just calling a General Election'. I am not at all up on it, but thought I read somewhere there are specific circumstances within the five year period when a General Election can be called. And the PM just wanting one was not one of the options.

I presume someone will enlighten. Thanks if anticipation.

No. But if he has a majority in the Commons he can call for a vote of confidence in himself and instruct his lot to vote against the motion, and then wait a fortnight.

Edit: like most legislation brought forward by Nick Clegg, it is a really bad Act.

Not so sure. He might announce in the Summer Recess in the hope of trashing Corbyn enough to get a majority without the DUP and then renege on the Irish Border responsibilities to drag it through

Didn't this country go to war because Germany invaded Poland?
And you reckon we will hand them UK territory on a plate?

I’m no Boris fan. He’s made himself out to be a complete pillock as foreign secretary, probably the worst foreign secretary that there has ever been. He promoted the leave campaign then ran away when he won.
However the electorate is fed up of the result of the ref not being executed, the Europeans have showed themselves up to be exactly what they are. The Brexit Party has proved it could get into government as it has the support. Boris is the best insurance against a Corbyn government.
Am I correct in saying Boris will need to win an election to be able to get anything substantial through parliament?

Depends on how many Tory and Labour turncoats there are; or on how many Tory and Labour MPs will respect the manifestos they were elected upon.

So it’s not going to be easy to get anything through then by the sounds of things
Hmm... to just leave, nothing needs to get through; although something(s) might need to be blocked.

What concerns me is what some Remain supporting MPs will do just out of spite, particularly Tory ones. There are a few that seem willing to try and shaft the country by preventing no-deal preparation. But that could be circumvented by tagging the necessary onto any convenient Money Bill.

I'm not a great constitutionalist and only have a working knowledge of the relevant Parliamentary procedure, but even I can think of a couple of mechanisms for getting past potential road blocks. I have no doubt, in fact I know, that there are very clever people on both sides of the argument trying to work out what they can do for their respective causes.

Were I BJ, I'd be making as much no-deal preparation as possible and, concurrently, trying to reach a deal. If the date passes and it's a no-deal, it will be very hard for former Remainers to vote against any actions then - they could no longer claim to be trying to prevent something and would be seen to be actively stopping necessary measures.
