Need to build a new bridge, going to use four 14 by 7 rsj 56kg beams to use as main supports, its just under 8 meters to span wont be huge weights going over, whats the best thing to use for the deck, thought about 6 inch panels or steel checker plate, any ideas?

I'd have thought 6 inch panels sounds a good idea Rob. Other thing I have seen is motorway crash barriers then concrete poured over the top, just trying to think where that was

if we use the girders under the wheels the panels are just to make the road not carry any load, will send your dad over with the baler to do the first run :ROFLMAO: had thought about using crash barriers not priced them yet though

I think panels would do the job well, and be a quick build. Just a thought though, Dad doesn't have a good history testing bridges so maybe send Martin over first

2 options Flat rack container upside down fill with concrete works well. If your going to use panels you need to discuss the pre tensioning of the wires with their engineer. We did one ten years ago and couldnt use normal panels but we were using them for strength too though.

Don’t know what they are called but they very strong an very light for there size. Open shipping container type, 40 ft long
After setting it on the 13 ton digger tracked across it no problem.
Widened it a foot on both sides, put some up stands an D rail on plus 2 gates
Instant bridge

I dont think concrete panels would be great idea they are not designed for use on there sides .
truck body may work , flat railway truck less the bogeys seem to be used in lots of places just not easy to get hold of in the but plenty strong enough , A 20ft flat bed off a big hook type loader would seem a good idea usually plenty of ex army ones for sale the photo is off a 40ft flat rack container but why not just keep it the right way around , its designed to hold weight in that direction and it less likely to rot. i would not cut a 40ft box down they are significantly lighter and rely on the box to supply the stiffness , without it they would be pretty weak

I didn’t cut anything off it except the front an back rail plus it is in the right way up

Its what Derky said; that’s a flat rack container (no roof, sides/walls, just fixed or collapsibles ends). They have much deeper side rails/sills than a regular box as they’re designed to transport awkward and heavy stuff that can’t otherwise fit in a box but needs “containerisation”.

Perfect for making bridges!
