Broadband / phoneline help

Hello.

I hope someone can help me out.. I have phonelines running through my house (1 socket in each room) on a connection plate with tv and satellite etc. These phonelines are all daisy-chained from 1 main 1 which is next to the main BT line in.

Now can I plug a cable from my router into the first daisy-chain to send internet around my house?

If so do I plug into the Ethernet socket in the router?

Main reason to ask is because we now have a BT youview box which needs plugging in but is 30ft from the router. thanks

Firstly, the phone connector is different to an ethernet connector. The phone is RJ11 where as ethernet uses RJ45.
Secondly, the cable used in ethernet is twisted pair, the twist is what gives shielding from outside interference.
If you have the right connectors it may work, but more than likely be very slow.
May be worth a go.
Failing that, would it be possible to pull a cat 5 network cable through easily to replace the phone cable?

Edit: if you do try to send data down the existing cable, make sure the bit you're sending data down is isolated from the incoming phone line, if you see what I mean.

I would say no because phone cable is different to Ethernet or network cable. If your bt box has wireless (wifi) then a wireless router/adsl would be best to get the box on Internet.

If you don't have a wireless broadband modem then I would use home plug adapters that would transmit a data line down your mains wiring to the bt box.

Plug the Router into the Master Socket with a decent filtered faceplate for the other extensions.

Buy a pair of powerline extenders.
Plug one in at the router position linked with a cat5 cable.
Plug the other in at the BT youview location again with a short cat 5 cable.

Neatest way to wire it is with a wall socket at each end. Then shortr patch lead at each end, - 1 into router, other into youview thingy
This sort of thing.
Cable Monkey supply 100 m rolls of cat5, differnet grades available

Neatest way is to terminate the cable in a wall socket

( just needs a punchdown tool)

Then a short patch lead at either end as necesary
