Brome seems to be very competitive against winter barley. Best not to grow it if you've got a bad seed burden, problem just gets worse. Isn't much of an issue in spring barley....

I would go maize followed by wheat followed by maize again or similar. You can kill brome in maize with nicosulfuron and the spring cropping means you have a chance to make a stale seed bed after the wheat and let it go green for months before spraying it off in the spring.

You can min-till maize quite happily but not sure roots work with it so well. Can put a spring barley in as well if you wish.

The plan is to rake it then spray it .I was suprised how bad it was this year. Only grow barley 1 in 5 year's. Was not an issue when ploughed
Theres your answer, but on a different note does anyone grow continuous wheat in the dd system as it seems most weeds can be controlled in a wheat situation.i presume continuous wheat would be early harvested and give time for a cover crop before mid Oct drilling

Spring barley helped immensely here and this year yielded as well as winter barley for less input cost so it's a no brainer IMO. Rectify any compaction issues now then in the spring spray off the mat of brome then direct drill spring barley.
Avoid mixing the seed deep into the soil as with any weed.
