Had a phone call from BT trying to convince me to change my 3 FTTP connections to a BT leased line, apparently its better because no body else in the 'neighbourhood' are using our internet speeds. Anybody else come across this?

Are you sure it was BT? I keep having companies phone about line rental and call charges. They are never clear who they are. Usually they tell me I need to upgrade to adsl2, I make them sweat for as long as I can be bothered before I tell them I have fttp.

I have the number saved its a local office of BT, think they are midlands based. I have a guy coming out to explain what the hell it is.

They said its more reliable and 4 hour repair, just had no landline for 6 days cos no knobhead in a corsa snapped a telegraph pole off and BT just left it coiled up but couldnt get any compensation because apparently its not their fault despite me having 3 days maximum repair time.

We are putting a leased line in at work. Install cost is covered by a grant and then £250 per month to lease. So quite expensive but is worth it to us coz we have remote offices. They actually run a new cable to your premises which isn't shared.

Maybe that is why we have been singled out for it as we already pay quite a bit for our broadband, we have 3 FTTP connections, one in my house, fathers house and the dairy office all about 150 meters apart, think we pay 40ish a month/connection, i often wonder if we should have 1 supply and bounce it around but wouldn't want to jeopardize a reliable connection.

We have 1 FTTP connection. Wired to 2nd house (Cat 5e cable down the sewer pipe - been living there happily for 4 years) Wireless bridge 200 m to cow office.
Been rock solid with full speed at each point

Leased line is a completely different ball game to FTTP. They both arrive on fibre, but the “backend” infrastructure is completely different.

With either option I would still recommend you have an independent backup on your router, like a 4G connection (if you have decent service) as with the best will in the world faults do happen.

If you want to check leased line providers I would suggest you have a check on some of the leased line broker websites as the up front install costs and ongoing rental costs vary massively.

In seriousness with a leased line, don’t just take BTs word for it. As said I’d have a search on broker websites like linebroker.co.uk.

You will find that there are more than a dozen companies which offer leased line services. The gotcha of course (as with FTTP) is the so called excess construction costs (ECC’s) but some of them may subsidise this cost into the rental...worth looking into. Serious cash though.
