With a good camera £250, something that works well but not all the world if lost or smashed my Nokia 5 has being good but has just about come to the end of its useful life.

Cant go to far wrong with a Samsung. Mines lasted me 2 years and barely had a scratch after countless drops. Get a good case and a screen protector and they'll last for years

I swear by my Moto G phones, used them for years & never had a spot of bother, famous last words !
My current is the Moto G7 plus.
For your budget if think one of the newer G8 models will be comfortably affordable.
This

I have a G5 plus the modern day brick smart phone with a strong case and glass screen protector

I bought an Ulephone Armour 3 with an extra toughened glass "glass" screen protector over two years ago, about 240 euros? from Aliexpress.

Very pleased - tough, water proof and so far survived the farm.

Charge normally lasts a week.

I'm just getting used to a Nokia 2.2 . Had 2 iPhone SE's in 2 n half years. Screens seem brittle and crack easier if dropped! I like this 2.2 now pleased

Another one for Moto G.
Had my G5 for a couple of years and still does what I need. Need a decent case and screen cover!

Motorola one action. It has a pure android skin and receives all the newest updates as first. I bought one for my wife and parents. Easy to use, good camera, ...
There some more "one" smartphones, check https://www.android.com/one/ .

I got also a Xiaomi. Good price/quality.

Motorola g7 power here, great phone, a bit more then I'd like to spend on a phone at €165 but it has good reviews. Great battery, overall quite big though but most are now.
Mind you, had a e5 play before which was horrible.
It came with a silicone case which is very nice, I hate those big cases, to bulky.

Moto G8 power here, just over £200 from Argos, £3.95 delivery, usually next day. Getting a vat receipt is a bit of a hassle as you need to phone customer services to request one. Now has 5 cameras , takes some decent pictures, even in low light situations. Has extra speakers for sound, as my g7 power had intermittent problems with the earpiece going quiet (which is a common problem on the G8 power), and you would struggle to hear a conversation in a noisy environment.
I've used a Rugged shield case for my last two phones, and they have done a good job of protecting my phones without being too bulky.
