Sorry, not meaning to tar anyone with brushes;)
Honest question as to how they are derived in the first place.
Can understand caeasrs but surely the odd pull could be "forgotten" by some given the price differences that now seem to be at stake.
I think they also take in to account gestation length and birth weight we also have to supply pelvic measurements, other breeds may do it different though I don't know
if you want the figures to work as they should for you and everyone else you have to be honest

I'd be more worried about those that forget to register their calves for months, it's getting better now more even playing field. It's the commercial guys I feel for when they think they are getting the bee's knees and they just ain't...
that wouldn't make any difference to growth rate EVBs as long as they forget to register ALL the calves for the same length of time as the figures are got from comparison within the herd not between herds
It does make them look like they have grown far better for there age than they have when you look at the actual animal, mind you some go to far with this and its bloody obvious the animal is far older than the birth date would have you believe
didn't some breeder up Scotland get caught doing this big style a couple years ago, seem to remember something on here about it

The cynic in me would say have a pen of bulls couple by high ebv ai bulls maybe they are no good , then say they are in the same control group as your bulls from your stock bull n you want to boost your figures as all ebvs are on a per herd basis. Get bigger weight gains on your show bulls less on your poorer ones by keeping them on lesser nutrition hey presto figures improve. thats the cynic in me speaking.
Don't think it was Scotland if your referring too a charolais breeder

I think it would be very difficult to fiddle birth dates on a big scale. Once you start telling lies it becomes difficult to remember what you said when and things always catch up with you at BCMS etc when the cow calves again 8 months later etc ;)

Calving books help, but u are right to be a good cheat you need a good memory , what we need to remember is pedigree guys normally calf to suit the bull sales , so August to December March to June is the where the majority come from

yea easy to tie yourself in knots but that won't stop some
There was a rumour of a farmer just north of here registering all his WB calves a year later. Not sure what he was gaining as only selling stores but I remember seeing his cattle and yes, they were big for their age but not hugely suspicious.
