Is ‘google sketchup’ still on the go? That used to be my go-to

Rather than go for something basic, just start with fusion 360 as there's so much learning material and community support available. Then you've got room to grow into doing more complex stuff without having to learn a whole new program.

+1 for Fusion 360, not the easiest to start out with but watch a few YouTube videos and it’ll be the only one you’ll ever need

I've been using Freecad lately. Watch a few youtube tutorials and you should be away.
