CALVING GATE

Any recommendations for a calving yoke gate system? Wanting a 3 in 1 type which is suitable to calf a beast, c-section if necessary and nurse calf.

Must fold back flat against wall when not in use, be suitable for big heifers and strong. Will be bolted through brick built wall.

Only intend buying one in my lifetime so looking for quality system. Must be easy release in case cow goes down in calving.

Several sorts available, there have been many threads on here before.

Next time I will buy the one which folds upwards for calf suckling, my current one has removable bars all of which are just in the wrong place, I use my crush for that as it has access doors that are just right.

As far as I remember all have top and bottom entry yokes and removable pipes in the side for Caesars - make sure you arrange it so the cow is standing right side against the wall and left side against the gate though, of course.

Thank you that's really useful. Hadn't crossed my mind about c-sec side and the issues of positioning for feeding a calf. Good tips. Much appreciated.

No it’s made by a local engineering guy . Will post a photo tomorrow. If you mount it between pens it doubles up for both sides . Very similar to your photo but all rigid at head yoke

Would love to see a photo. My shed is split in two halves so will need to measure and check iv enough room for it.... and then some behind.

I have the Ritchie one. Great bit of kit. Far better than cattle crush for spooking. It's attached to the wall on one side, the one furthest from the yoke. And pinned to mobile gates on the other. The comment about needing space behind is true, next years modification is to make the back gate of the pen easier to open. Not a pinned mobile gate so you can get the calving jack on.

How many mobile gates are there? I only wanted a yoke and one gate? Do you have a pic of your system?

If you go ahead don’t be afraid to mount it reasonably high to swing it over straw bedding .

Ours is barred to a post .i Made the hole slightly higher so that when it is being used there is no weight on the hangers as it weighs a fierce weight .
That sounds like great advice. I'm definitely going to have one of these, just gotta research what is best for our shed, do my measurements and take all advice on fitting.
