Thinking of upgrading our cambridge rollers, am I correct in thinking that it will be heavier if it has breaker rings? will be looking for 2nd hand and not very expensive if anybody has anything they no long require

Breaker rings do add extra weight per metre. Bigger diameter rings don't always mean better rolling but they do reduce the draft requirement on soft ground as the footprint is longer as the rings aren't "climbing" as much. I think the biggest size of ring for breakers is 24". That's the biggest Cousins could do for mine with breakers though they can go up to 30" with normal rings only.

I wouldn't be without breaker rings. My drill leaves a corrugated finish so the trench the seed is in doesn't get much consolidation. The breaker rings keep the main ones clean and will dip down into the hollows.

I like my breakers on anything heavier and cloddier they do a better job, they would also do a better job i think on some of my land that's a bit cappy as the dimples would help make it rougher. I agree about not using on the growing crop. The thing that really vexes me about mine is rolling post drill on heavyish land with reasonable size clods in they can 'pluck' them from the seed bed and flick them up, unless its very dry, even when rolling quite slowly making the place look untidy and potentially uncovering seed.

So what sort of spec are the rollers you are moving up from?

It's worth looking at a set with a weight transfer system that means not all of the weight of the frame is on the centre gang. I can't think of other makes that have this other than Opico HeVa's SAT System. I'm sure there are alternatives. My Cousins Contour rollers have no means of doing this at all & I've got a Biodrill seeder on the back of mine for slug pellets or grass seed or cover crop seed.
