Wanting to clear a small patch middle of a field so we can go straight through it.

But are we limited to bps 1/March or doesn't it matter?
I can't find the rules
At the moment BPS rules know longer apply bur DEAFra are busy making up new rules (red tape) to replace the now defunct EU rules. The rules in the 1981 wildlife & countryside act do apply so watch out for bird nests etc!

If it's more than 5m3 you'll need a felling licence. Once you have that, I don't beleive there are any restrictions on when you can fell the trees, providing you've done a survey on them to ensure there are no nesting birds.

Good luck trying anything legal.

HSE trumps any reason against felling & negates correspondence with bureaucrats until after they are down, it can be done swiftly.
Remember you own them

So basically photo of every tree would be a good defense that I haven't damaged a nest?
It's not a wood or anything just a few weed trees that have now been mown around instead of gone, if the field hadn't been grazed for last 20 years they wouldn't be there

Health and safety trumps all. That tree you talk of has some dead hanging branches that will fall at any moment and kill someone. Best bet is to take it down at the base..!
failing that there’s been some windy weather last few days, it blew down!

We had it years ago but did independant test borings of trees to show rotten and danger to public.
Didn't stop a forestry commission investigation though as some public complained to them.
All came out ok after results confirmed.

Wasters out there and report anything all the time.
