Can the Observer and Guardian sink any lower

Dominic Cummings' farm is reported to have received 235,000 Euros in subsidy.

The Observer and the Guardian are making an issue of the fact that it turns out that along with his parents and one other person, Cummings owns a farm in County Durham, and that the farm has received 20,000 Euros each year from EU subsidies.

It obviously isn't a very big farm, and by most standards, that would be a very modest amount. But it goes to show how far the Remainers/left-wing press are willing to go to try to discredit those who are intent on honouring the result of the referendum.

Will the NFU put out a statement defending the farm's right to receive subsidy, and to point out that maybe all the subsidy from what is obviously a small farm is most probably allocated to paying whoever is working on the farm. In the same way that the Queen's farms, which will receive infinitely more subsidy, will allocate their subsidy to the farm staff who look after the farms and help feed the nation - and that both the Queen and Dominic Cummings won't see a penny of it.

But I doubt it. Despite most farmers wanting to leave the EU, deal or no deal, the NFU seems to be on the opposing side.

TBH, I'm fed up being beaten by the " You receive millions in subsidy stick " every time you engage in conversation with vegans / environmentalists / horsey women haggling over the price of haylage. Part of me wishes it gone, and replaced with something worthwhile. Sigh.

If this is a fact why is there an issue?

Ah you mean the 'non binding' referendum that was the subject of specific targetting by Aaron Banks and others via Cambridge Analytica and that is leading to, in effect, a right wing coup. Still keep on beliefing it was democratic if you must.

Man actively involved in making himself poorer shocker! They do realise that if he was somehow 'on the make' he wouldn't be working for the UK to leave the EU and thus lose the right to subsidies under the CAP?

On another day the Guardian will tell us that no-one should be paid less than the 'living wage' (£9/hr or £17.5k/yr for 37.5hr week). So €20k split between 4 partners means chances are that everyone would be significantly under the poverty line, even if they managed to make another €20k of profit from farming on top, assuming the farm was their only income of course.

“Most farmers” ... really?

Anyway Brian and Brenda do very nicely out of the sweat of their tenant farmers who know doubt allocate a large proportion of their SFP to paying rent

Yes, of all the farmers with whom I have discussed Brexit, the majority are in favour of leaving. And surprisingly, those where sheep are a significant part of the business (like me) are in favour of leaving, deal or no deal.

And as far as HM is concerned, if she lets any of her farms, I am sure that her tenants are treated fairly and that they are not supporting HM and her husband by the sweat of their brows.

I speak as one of her Majesty's loyal subjects, so I might have a slightly biased view.

I notice the Brexit loving Daily Mail has joined in the Cummings bashing.

Those of us who understand the system, and whatever we think about Brexit and Cummings, know that there is no justification for criticising Cummings, or rather his family or whoever works the farm, for receiving an average of £17,000 per year in subsidy.

His family farm seems to have been a very minor recipient, and it pales into insignificance compared to:

1. Farms owned or run by the Co-op, the NT, the RSPB, various golf courses and water Boards, etc.....

2. Land agents etc and farmers/gamblers in the know who bought very big numbers of entitlements and rented naked acres to receive huge subsidy payments without any input other than the initial investment and the agents' fees for filling in forms correctly.

If Cummings' parents are NFU members, surely the NFU will come to their defence and counteract the undue and embarrassing publicity.
But perhaps they aren't NFU members, but joined the Country Landowner's Federation instead, in the hope of meeting a far better class of farmer.

Oddly I have yet to speak to any farmer here who actively supports a No Deal Brexit and rarely any who voted leave.

Of course Brenda & Brian do very nicely out of their lets. Brian alone nets £33m per annum from the Duchy of Cornwall. That's some sweat in my opinion

I personally don't see it as hypocritical for him to take subsidies. And far less so than the likes of Farage and his Brexit party Ltd taking EU money and doing nothing. We don't actually know Cummings personal view of Brexit is, as his writing shows equal disdain for many leavers and remainers and to some extent the whole concept of parliamentary democracy in it's current form, probably putting him more in the Chaos Capitalists camp.

Actually you (and every other person in receipt of taxpayers money ) is benefiting from the sweat of the tenants of the Crown Estate. All the profits from the Crown Estate are paid direct to the Government, then 25% is paid back to the Royal Family to cover their personal and public costs, and the cost of maintaining royal residences. So the tax payer makes 3 times as much out of the CE than the Queen does. In fact a lot more than that as the taxpayer is not liable to maintain the royal residences, which it would be if there was no royal family.

I believe it was as fair and democratic as any vote, probably more than most because of the huge number of voters.
I've always considered myself liberal but I am dismayed by the hard liberals who for so long espoused 'the will of the people' but can't bear it when the majority don't agree with them and refer to everything as 'populist'.
A non binding referendum that a large majority agreed to honour.

Not Brian. Directly funded by Duchy rents. He is a rent boy

And with any luck Airmiles Andy will go to prison for child molestation (but it wont happen). Only one of the whole shower who deserves any support from any of us is Brenda. Rest are an absolute shower
