Details are rapidly emerging which show the NFU backed greening module aims to fulfill supermarket environmental commitments by robbing farmers of their livelihoods

The NFU is backing a 20% reduction of red meat, and a cut in British food production of 50%

The NFU are in the supermarkets pockets, and are actively working against our industry, while supposedly being our representatives

They have long rode roughshod over their members, but this cannot be ignored. They are attempting to take away our livelihoods, our future

Is it not time that every NFU member sent a clear and unequivocal message to the gravy train supping parasites who were secretly attempting to sell our industry down an amazon deforested river?

It needs a social media group forming by someone who's a skilled organiser, commentator, and speaker to get farmers to join it so that as an industry we can see the depth of anger against this proposal a platform that you can be confident that any action taken at any given time you know that you have X thousands of troops ready right behind you , it's the only way as I see it you can confidently put your cards on the table , sady I'm not media savy enough to be that man

I'm livid about this, and I hope British Farming Union will hold NFU, RT, AHDB and the other farming unions to account over it.

Read on....

According to F Weekly article, Red Tractor planned to introduce the GFC to help several supermarkets meet their “WWF basket” commitments to source 50% of produce and grains and 100% of meat from environmental schemes by 2030.

So, I decided to look up what the "WWF basket" actually is.

Remember, the GFC aims to help supermarkets fulfil their "WWF basket", and introduction of the GFC was "unanimously" agreed by the Red Tractor ownership board.

Well, take a look at what NFU, RT and AHDB have signed us up to...

According to Farmers weekly Red Tractor are trying to bring in the Greener Farm Commitment (GFC) to help supermarkets meet commitment they have signed up to under the “WWF Basket” https://www.fwi.co.uk/business/shocking-cost-of-red-tractors-green-module-revealed

But how many of us know what "WWF Basket" stands for?

Have a look here, but sit down first! https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/2021-11/WWF-Basket-Blueprint-for-Action.pdf

The document takes a bit of digestion but the “Diet” section includes nuggets like:

“Reduce the UK’s biomass consumption footprint by 50% by 2030. Reduce the consumption of meat and dairy by at least 20% and increase the proportion of plant-based foods in the average diet.”

“Set ambitious targets to decrease sales of animal proteins and increase sales of plant proteins to achieve a 50/50 split by 2030.”

“Increase the proportion of vegetarian and plant-based meals relative to meat-containing meals using Eating Better benchmarking as a guide. “

In the “Agriculture” section:

Reduce nitrogen and phosphorus use by at least 80%

As part owners of Red Tractor, I find it hard to understand how the NFU and AHDB have allowed GFC to get this far. Tom Bradshaw has stated that he thinks it is the process, not the principle that is the problem with GFC. I disagree, it is both the principle and the process that is wrong and no organisation that claims to represent UK farmers should be part of it. If UK farming organisations cannot stand up to the British Retail Consortium now, there will be no UK farms for them to represent in the near future.

Consider joining the British Farming Union - farmers standing up for farmers. https://www.bfu.org.uk

Please forward this message on to raise peoples awareness of the issues our industry is facing and the real implications of Red Tractors Greener Farm Commitment.

See this discussion about the "WWF Basket" and the implications for UK agriculture.

Question is, how should BFU react? What do you want to see us doing?

Initial thought is make sure Red Tractor don't introduce the GFC module.

Me neither after he described this forum as toxic.
nick…

Toxic?

In comparison to the contents of the greening module that the NFU and their subsidiary company, paper trail pedants RT, were trying to innocuously slip through at the behest of the supermarkets?

No defense forthcoming for the greening module from anyone connected to the NFU, RT or the AHDB, would suggest they have become somewhat poorly, but the poison has come from themselves, not this forum

They're all laying low, hoping the furore will die down a bit, as they all know they haven't a leg to stand on.
(Hence, why they've kept it all quiet for three years while they tried to stitch us all up).

They must now realise that they've gone too far and it's now going to mean some serious consequences.

I bet there's been a lot of frantic phone calls between the lot of them, this week, wondering what line they can try to spin to us next to save their ar$es.

We now know Red Tractor were introducing the GFC to give supermarkets a vehicle to fulfill their WWF food blueprint committments.

We also know RT have a history of mission creep, so how long before GFC goes into creep mode. 20% lower livestock stocking densities, methane inhibitors, 80% less N+P fert, etc.

We also know NFU said the GFC was "right in principle".

To me, this means NFU are happy with a policy which is designed to reduce agricultural output in the UK. If I was an NFU member I wouldn't be happy. In fact, I'd be fuming. We just can't support something like the GFC of it's linked to the WWF Basket. Would be crazy to support anything like that.

Problem is, no-one knew anything about the GFC. It had been kept a secret. The top table were signing us all up for it behind our backs. Don't forget, whatever NFU decide at RT it's then pushed on ALL farmers (NFU members or not).

At BFU all members get an equal say. Bottom up decisions rather than top down.

We've already polled members about the GFC, and 95% said they want to see it scrapped. So now BFU has a mandate on that. The top people haven't decided policy on it. The members decided the policy

BFU members should be getting an email this morning, asking their views, and what they'd like BFU to do about the WWF Basket.

Join us for £10/year, and please tell your friends and neighbours about us if you want to put a stop to this nonsense from the NFU.

In reference to the contemptible content of the greening module, you say "we now know“

What you have not said is that without efforts from organisations such as the fledgling BFU, we would NOT NOW KNOW

The NFU (and presumably the AHDB) would have happily let their supermarket serving serpentine subsidiary RT give away our British agricultural future

We must not become complacent, and think that silence from the NFU and their ilk indicates that they have cancelled the module introduction

The greening module introduction has only been postponed. The supermarkets still need to to fulfill their pseudo science environmental commitments. They still intend decimating British agricultural output with help from the NFU, our supposed industry representatives

I was skeptical of the need for an apparently clandestine British Farmers Union. It is now clear that without the BFU helping to uncover the rot within the NFU, my school age son's desire to continue our families farming life would have been over before he begun

I hope that with help from the BFU, the greening module will be abolished, and my son will have the opportunity to farm our hills here at home

You are correct that GFC is only on pause, that skirmish is far from won. I don’t see the supermarkets giving up on WWF Basket aims at the first or second hurdle.
They tried giving lots of shelf space to plant based products, but it didn’t sell as hoped, so they have scaled that back.
Now they are trying GFC, and I have no doubt they are developing other strategies to move in the direction of WWF Basket.

GFC is a small part in the battle for our farming future

What the GFC debacle has made utterly apparent is who's side the NFU are fighting on: It is not ours

The NFU does not represent the best interests of our industry. They are supporting supermarkets robbing our livelihoods for their profits

Without the fledgling BFU, the National Farmers Union would have already pushed through the GFC, and our fight for a farming future would have been over before we knew that it had even begun
