Caring for the OH

Due to recent circumstances I am now looking after my OH .
It's at times like these that you suddenly realise how much she did without me realising it . Things are getting a bit easier now but the last 3 weeks have been a shocker .
Just the daily jobs of helping her get up and dressed ,daily meals to sort out , shopping in a way that we don't run out of things instead of running out and charging off to the shop, keeping the house somewhere near clean ,getting the washing done , even filling up and emptying the dishwasher becomes a time consuming excersise .....on top of this there is still all the farmwork to do and keep on top of.
I couldnt go too far from home for long lengths of time but that is now easing .
It's been and is a struggle but when I look at the alternative I am so thankful I still have her to care for !!!!!
TOP MARKS TO THE AIR AMBULANCE !!!

p.s. She is recovering well

This is the conversation we have here all the time. Everyone needs to know how the washing machine works and how to log on!

Hope you have help. Online shopping is great you can keep it on a roll so stick stuff in the basket to hold the delivery then delete them and add more a few days before. Using a calendar to remind you of what needs doing is good. Can you get a member of the family to take out the washing and iron?

I have no idea what happened but hope all is better now and on the road to recovery.

Had a carer come in for Father in law but I had to pack him off to his other daughter in Sussex but since then been doing most of it on my own but it's been real tough .
Bit of a disaster with my first attempt at the washing machine ...couldn't find washing powder so put a cup full of fairy liquid in the machine .....won't do that again . Learned later that you put small satchels in with the washing not washing powder .
I'm quite at risk with Covid so I've avoided having too many in the house but now got a freezer full of meals cooked by the kids which I just have to defrost and warm up .
It makes you stop and think what would happen if we were both in an accident or something .
Happily she is well on the road to recovery .

Sorry remember now, you posted it earlier, not nice. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

What’s she got lined up to get her own back when she’s better ?

I suspect too few of us have a Plan B ready to roll.
I'm pleased to see that your good lady is improving, puts all the other day to day mundane stuff into some perspective.

@Hfd Cattle Well done , just remember this is temporary; i did something similar for my OH whilst she was on chemo / post surgery

if the ironing doesn't get done - it doesn't matter
if the hoovering doesn't get done - it doesn't matter
if you need to help your OH and there's a sink full of washing up - it doesn't matter (OH is more important)
if you are absolutely knackered from farm work and have to get a take away or beans on toast it doesn't matter , its not defeat its temporary

And most importantly, don't be afraid to ask for help no matter how trivial. whether its a friend to do you shopping( online or otherwise) or a neighbor to feed stock because You need a break or rest. If you need to pay a contractor to do some farm work (spraying , fert spreading etc) its not defeat its buying yourself some time to look after OH

all the best for a swift recovery

Thankyou . We are steadily coming out of it now . Got a cleaner in ,kids done loads of meals for us .
I've quickly learnt that some jobs just don't matter, both on the farm and in the house ,and that it will all fall into place .
Neighbours have been brilliant keeping an eye on livestock which are off the home farm and good offers of help from TFF ers from as far away as @Celt83 thankfully we haven't had to call on him but I know he would have been here like a flash .

All good advice but it does depend how your OH copes with some jobs not getting done. Of course you do what you can, my wife has been long term ill on and off and when she was not too mobile she got quite depressed looking at the washing etc piling up because she felt useless. Careful choices of chores is the key.

Anyhow, I hope it all goes well @Hfd Cattle (y)

No need to mention it HC but I'm glad to hear that she's on the mend. I'm only an hour and a half away so no biggy (probably sooner after the rollicking my old man would give me for crossing the border into enemy territory! 😉😂)

Our wives are our best friends, lovers, carers and arch enemies all rolled into one. Mine has got the arch enemy bit down to a tee now so I guess she's working on the other three! 😂 Seriously I know I'm punching above my weight and I'm thankful each day that we found each other.

Apologies HC but I've been meaning to phone you but haven't had the chance as trying to juggle home schooling the kids, the farm and going to market isn't something I've mastered yet. But we will catch up soon.

Give our best to the wife HC.
