Carrying livestock in a pick up

What is the official law on this I carry sheep/goats sometimes calves in the back of a landrover defender pick up with a ifor Williams top on. I asked the vet at a local slaughterhouse he said he had no issues with it but added it was local authority's call rather than his that mattered . Now another slaughterhouse has told me I run the risk of prosecution if I get caught or catch them on a bad day . I would like to know what is the official law/rule as I have sometimes only one or two animals to deliver to abattoir and towing a trailer 30 mile round trip seams a waste of my diesel and added unnecessary time TIA

I have been told that the law states you can move stock in a pickup so long as the animal can reasonably be lifted by hand. The decision then comes down to someone's definition of 'reasonable'. After all, sock lambs are transported in this manner.

I took some pet lambs to slaughter once in the back of ex-BT yellow Maestro van. The vet was a bit put out but couldn't say what I had done wrong. I opened the back door and one of the hoggs butted me right on the chin, much to the vet's amusement.

That's not too bad. A maestro is/was a lot lower than a modern day pick up. I took my first pigs in the back of an escort van.

Has anyone ever modified a pick up truck back to incorporate a ramp.
we carried about 10 at a time in the back of various vans , transit and ivecos all over the country , modified an old fibreglass cheese vat to go in back with ramp , even had trading standards take a look at mart , (they thought they had caught someone ) they said ok as long as ventilation ok and ramp angle right and non slippy floor (which it was ) . I kept container in case i go back to vans again
