The fan belt tensioning guide on our old Case 4240 LP keeps breaking. Called local dealer for replacement and the one they sent does't look anything like the broken one and doesn't fit. Dealer says that is what they were sent by the manufacturer.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem and how to resolve it?
We've had the tractor 7 years and its been perfect for out little small holding, but this bracket breaks every other week now.

The replacement one they have sent you, looks like the one I have replaced on 4230 lp. If they can’t get the right part for you try a local blacksmith/fabricator, it’s not exactly precision engineering

I think the old one is adapted. Many years ago I had the same problem only solved after making a new main mount to bolt on the engine casing. Otherwise its very difficult to prevent alternator rocking and mounting breakage.

I agree that the old one is adapted, and suspect it's to make a rh alternator fit the lhs. The crank in it is probably why it's breaking. If you were to take the alternator off and convert to lh (take out bolts and rotate one end 1/3 turn), then the new bracket should fit and not break.

Is the alternator pivot at the bottom worn and allowing it to twist out of line? This would put undue strain on the bracket and wear the belt.

This, in the photo the bottom mount looks like a threaded rod cobbled together affair to fit the non original alternator that has by now worn the timing cover and does not sit straight. It looks like it should have a two lug alternator. Plenty of them available and would he easier to swap the alternator once and for all

The correct alternator, as others have pointed out, 2 lower mounting lugs

The joys of finding a bodge done by a previous owner. If it was mine I'd change the alternator to the correct type, preferably an uprated Mahle alternator, although someone will likely say I've got more money than sense and another bodge will do.
