Case 885 torque amplifier

a good friend of mine has just acquired a 885 and among other minor issues the torque amplifier isn’t working.

He has asked me to have a look and see what I can figure it out. The wiring on the tractor has seen better days, so first I will be checking the wiring from the toggle switch to the solenoid, would I be correct in thinking this can be found behind the left hand fuel tank?

Has anyone got any tips or tricks when it comes to these toque amplifiers?

We kept fixing ours and it kept going wrong again.

In the end it stuck in low so we gave up and left it there!

Gapples, Richard W, agrimax and one other who's name escapes me will all be able to give pointers.
We had an 884 repaired years ago and the TA pack leaked and slipped soon after. The Company that carried out the work repaired again and later it still failed. I found out some time afterwards that there may have been an issue with a worn shaft and a new seal on working properly very briefly. My point being some considerable care and some knowledge is advisable. These particular mechanics had carried out many successful TA repairs but could still get caught out.

Everyone has pretty much summed up what to check::

1) check fuse 10
2) check the low speed dump switch activated by the clutch pedal (designed to dump the oil pressure out of the high side when shifting gear) - near the safety start switch
3) check to see if you have power down to the solenoid - the connector is in the left side of the square base-plate with about a dozen bolts just back from the bell-housing

IH always boasted that their TA was superior to MF's Multipower because unlike The Massey version, you had engine braking whether you were in low or high TA, whereas with The Massey you had to quote : "Shift to high for engine braking" Fair point, but in reality, The TA always gave more mechanical trouble than multipower.

They gave more problems because people downshifted with a load on going down hill and it crucified them - the manual warns against this. Plus the earlier ones with a cable shift drivers tried to feather in which also allowed slippage.....electric helped to stop this, it was either in or out

Does anyone know if it is still the same torque amplifier in a CX 100. It’s got an electronic splitter on the main gear lever, just interested as good to know if I need to avoid shifting it into low under load.
