Case 885XL bad starting

Hi all,

I have a Case 885XL and it has always been a pain to start, lack of power and slow to turn over.

It has had a new battery and a new starter motor. Any idea’s what to try next? I’m wondering if I should try a new alternator on it as it seems as though it is not charging. But even when it is fully charged (with a battery charger) it is still difficult in cold weather.

I would like to update it to a low houred CX100 or 4230 but can’t find one anywhere at a sensible price / sensible hours.

Did you change the starter for a gear reduction type? They spin much faster. Check all the cables from the battery and the connections, is the earth bolted to the chassis, check the mating surfaces are clean bare metal. Personally I don't think much of the normal replacement battery terminals, just those two screws trying to clamp the copper strands. Originals were soldered on . They can easily loose cranking power. Now buying a bolt down clamp type of battery terminals.

Id second the geared starter. Wev a 390 mf thats brutal to start even in not cold weather. Put geared starter on it and made a big difference. I could tel ye another wee trick to gettin it goin if u promise not to laugh 🙈

Ok well i use this on some of the older kit on cold mornins. Take air filter out
Get 2 sheets of news paper roll it into a finger shape with inch-2inches hole in center. Dip bottom 2 inches in diesel. Light it and hold it just inside airfilter box while sum1 turns the key. It works a treat

Measure the cranking voltage on the starter solenoid terminal that connects to the motor , this is the 'bottom line' voltage after any losses due to poor contacts/connections in the line from the battery. It shouldn't be less than 8v. Motors can rely on the chassis to make the connection to battery -ve terminal so fixings should be good.

We use to use a rag wrapped round a stick and dip it in diesel

Its bad for polishin liners. U wouldnt be gettin near my tractòrs way that stuf
The old scraper tractor on a frosty morning? Needs must. Example a red db880 four cylinder , father bought new in 63, allwsys a bad starter when cold, so would have a sniff of easy start,. Years later in a clear out sale of a local DB agent in Lampeter bought a recon cav injection pump, completely transformed the way she started. Turn the excess fuel screw and away. After years of easy start.

Try it see if it makes a difference. It's an inexact science some stoppers have a different clearance to others. Also don't touch the throttle and once running push stopper back in and then rev.
Mind the 785 and 885 motors are different so I might be different. Used to work on 84 series too not sure about 74 worldwide though haven't driven one in 30+ years
