Case 895 not working on 4x4 and high range

Any ideas - new to tractors having just bought first one. Case 895 - it has a switch for speed/range on the top left of dash which makes the speed dip briefly when flicked but stays the same in the end - seems to be in low range as in top gear (4th) only at jogging speed!. Also doesn't seem to be giving any drive to the front wheels. I can't see a 4x4 selector so assume its perm 4x4 but only getting rear wheel. Then, get one wheel slip when put any weight on front loader so assume may need rear weights? Sorry to put a load of questions on one thread but hoping for some suggestions ideas (other than sell it quick!)

I suppose you have checked fuses? Check the 4wd (the switch is probably below the steering column) by selecting in a slow forward speed and lock hard one way. Whilst still travelling on full lock release the 4wd and you should get a sight jump or hop on the front tyres as the axle windup is released. You should have a 4 speed syncro gearbox with Hi, Lo and reverse. No syncro on the ranges. The electric switch on the dash is the Torque Amplifier or 2 speed shift that should double the main gears like a splitter. When Hi is selected with the switch pushing down the clutch fully should disengage the Hi. If you are travelling slowly up a slope in a low main gear but high TA/split gear depressing the clutch partly should release the drive but hold the tractor from rolling back. Fully depressing the clutch should fully release the transmission.
The TA/2 speed shift should be positive on up shift. Do not use the TA downshifting to engine brake, downshift TA only under load.

hi i dind not think the 4x4 was so complicated. i thought it was perminant 4 wheel, i have just bought a 1990 895 xl and found the drive shaft was not conected to the front axle it was held in place by a piece of hydraulic hose sleeved over both shafts. the clamp on the rear was fitted with m8 nuts and bolts. sent for the right ones. does the front axle connect with a clamp or should it have a UJ, does not look like there is enough room for a uj. nice looking machine sungate. thanks kenn

There is likely a significant reason why the shaft was disconnected. So proceed with care. The centre drive does not have ujs just straight couplings.

thanks for that, yes my idea is to jack the front and make sure the front diff is ok first. ie turns with out any probs. it has done alot of work and is a bit rough.
